Fractured Bones And MS

Hi I have been confined to a profile bed with an air mattress since February due to a nasty pressure sore on the left hand side of the bottom of my spine. Fast forward to now and district nurses come out every day to pack the hole that’s the sore left me with. Apparently it’s packed to stop sepsis plus to stop my skin growing over the top and putting me at risk of another pressure sore breaking out. In March I noticed the top of my right leg was very swollen, three times the size of my left leg. I have a fractured femur which came as a huge shock because I had no idea what caused this to happen. The fracture is in the top of my leg as it joins my hip (or pelvis)

I didn’t fall down or walk into anything to damage my femur and after my first follow up visit the surgeon whose care I’m under said it was caused by my MS. I haven’t had an operation thankfully as I was told the bone was healing itself. My next appointment is the middle of July so I’m hoping for some good news. I’m not even allowed to sit on a recliner armchair and this bed is just terrible. Until I did a search I had no idea our bones could suffer because of MS - the gift that keeps giving…..😥 My leg will never be straight again which is the least of my worries.

Has anybody else suffered from broken or fractured bones due to MS?

Thanks for your time 🌸🌸

I read your post, and was shocked at how awful all this has been for you. I didn’t know that you could get broken or fractured bones with MS, but nothing surprises me with this disease really.

I have MS but nothing like yours. I had a complete knee replacement last July, and my walking has been horribly affected. I can only walk with two crutches, and my new knee just bends back every time I walk causing a lot of pain. I am having neurophysio help (when they don’t cancel the appointments at the last minute! ).

I really wish you well, and just wanted you to know you’re not alone.

Hi and thank you so much for your kind words. I have to admit that it’s getting to me. An air mattress sounds lovely but it really isn’t. When I have spasms or jumpy legs it’s agony on the fractured side. I feel for you, you’re suffering with your knee replacement as though MS isn’t enough. I haven’t walked for approximately 17 years now……oh the things we take for granted. Please be careful with your crutches and I hope your pain eases soon.

Sending my very best wishes 🌺
