The answer is it depends on what you mean by "safe." If you are trying to prevent pregnancy, then some form of birth control is needed. There is nothing about having ET that would intrinsically require the use of a condom other than preventing pregnancy.
There have been some previous conversation on the forum about whether a condom is advisable for people taking hydroxycarbamide (hydroxyurea). There is a risk of exposing the partner to HU during sexual intercourse. Thus this advisement.

Some do not feel there is much risk involved. It really is a matter of evaluating for yourselves what level of risk is acceptable.
