Good question! Its an amino acid and I take it for cold sores. :)

SWMBO uses it for the same purpose.I get aphthous ulcers [canker sores] at times from stress or eating fresh acidic fruits like pineapple, and if I hold a tablet on the lesion [SWMBO wets one first before applying to her lip], for about 5-10 minutes, the pain goes away for about a day- after the 5-10 min, I swallow it w/ H2O.

I have found that the dual tx [topical and PO] shortens the course to about 1/2 of the usual time to heal, but more importantly, I can eat, drink, and talk w/o pain while it is healing.Best,

PA

I tried it for a couple weeks but any effect seemed weak. NAC seems to have more effect.

Same here on the cold sores, I take a few times per year for that, but it's possible the IFN or other supps I take are helping that since it seems to be quite are now.

I find it excellent in conjunction with Zinc + Vitamin C, if I have felt a coldsore coming on, I can completely ward it off with this combination. A Herbalist once told me it is excellent against all viruses :-)
