Hi All, just a quick question to ask If anyone knows if Oestperosis is related in anyway with ET jak2 pos as I've in the last few months developed this in the bottom of my spine! TIA sorry if spelt incorrectly 😁
OA and ET: Hi All, just a quick question to ask If... - MPN Voice
OA and ET
I was diagnosed with ET(jak2 neg) in 2003 and had prolapsed disc in 2014 and was diagnosed with Osteopenia this year.
Yes, it can be challenging but bone related and obviously circulation problems are common amongst MPN’ers.
I'm PV Jak2 + diagnosed with mild osteopenia after a spinal fracture but a year later had a second spinal fracture so I think to say mild osteopenia is probably underestimating things. When I put it to my consultant that I thought the blood cancer was to blame for the fractures she said any bone marrow condition will weaken the bones.

I have ET and have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and now need a hip replacement . My consultant thinks they the arthritis has been accelerated due to ET
I showed my consultant the report and just never said anything, so I'm assuming it's just the start and mild, I will have to have a look at the letter properly again I think, rather than putting away in a draw!
tina6, it's important to become familiar with boron, magnesium, vitamins K2 MK4 & MK7, Delta Tocotrienol from annatto and vitamin C.. You'll need 18 mg of boron a day, 600 mg of magnesium, 45 mg of MK4 three times a day and 320 mcg of MK7 once a day to activate the calcium binding actions of Matrix GLA protein and osteocalcin, 300 mg of Delta Tocotrienol, 10 ml liposomal vitamin C three times a day along with your calcium and vitamin D. Boron is often overlooked yet can also benefit arthritis alone and especially in combination with the fore mentioned group.
I agree. It’s hard to say. I recently read an article that says inflammation can lead to certain types of cancer. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in my early 30’s, arthritis in my mid-40’s, and ET Jak2 when I was 52. I’m 63 now and progressed to myelofibrosis last year. So I do think it’s all related.
I want to add to my earlier post, my wife was diagnosed with myelofibrosis four years ago after transitioning from the ET she had from 1990. She is 75 and her bone density test this past December shows no osteoporosis.
Thankyou for all your replies, very helpful x
The short answer is that there is apparently increased risk. Note that if you are JAK2 positive, then chances are you experience an overload of inflammatory cytokines. Other MPN mutations can also impact the JAK-STAT pathway. The role of systemic inflammation is quite broad and complex. I just radically oversimplified what is actually a very complicated issue. Here are a couple of articles you may find of interest.

It is really hard to sort out what is MPN-related and what is not. Sometimes we have cooccurring issues that are not related to our MPNs. Other times issues can be linked, but in ways that are not well understood. There is great hope in the merging research in understanding and treating the issues we experience with MPNs. It helps to try to keep up with it, though for those of us who are not already medical professionals, there is lots to learn to be able to put it all in context.
Hope that helps.
Mazcd Do you know of any connection between the conditions mentioned and MPNs. I am struggling to understand any connections relevant to arthritis or osteoporosis. Thanks.
Hmm, that sounds like a pattern. I had surgery for two prolapsed discs and now am heading towards osteoporosis...I blame high doses of steroids but maybe there is a connection to my ET (JAK2+).

Ok, just read, too late, Maz's reply from Prof Harrison. Must be an age / body deterioration thing...I'm only 45!! 🤔😩
