Hi,

What MPN do you have?

There are different reasons for different people.

Mine is very enlarged, I do just fine.

Hi i have Pv, mine is at 22.5 cm.

Even different MPN's have different reasons why the spleen may be enlarged.

Apologies Paul...

Yours is obviously 10cm larger at 22.5cm. I can't really imagine how uncomfortable that must be when mine is only 12.5cm, and yet I almost always feel its discomfort...

I rarely take breakfast for that same reason...

That's the strange thing I never feel any discomfort.

Its obviously caused me problems internally. But I have no pain and doesn't affect my appetite.

Hey Ash... :)

I am Post ET/Myelofibrosis and my spleen is also slightly enlarged... Interestingly at the same size that the two of you have previously mentioned (12.5cm)

In my case it is alright at the moment but it does have the effect of making me feel like my stomach is already full, when I usually have not eaten anything etc...

Hi Ash,

I cannot have any idea as to what is causing your enlarged spleen. What do your doctors tell you about your condition?

What MPN do you have?

Mine is Post Essential Thrombocythemia (PET)/Myelofibrosis. Yes that is classified as a type of blood cancer.

However, as others have already stated, many things could cause an enlarged spleen.

Jane13 has answered that question well below...

And Maz has also suggested that you revisit your doctors... All good advice in my view.

Best wishes

"What's it from" is a good question: lots of things can cause an enlarged spleen. If u have the mpn conditions covered by this site then u have an enlarged spleen because it's doing some of the work that your bone marrow used to do because your bond marrow has a mutation. Many of us here will have an enlarged spleen - sometimes very enlarged - most without problem. Those of us with only mildly enlarged spleens won't notice it at all so I doubt it's a problem for you in itself. But, like you, we need more information about what caused it.

Suggest u go and see you doc again asap and ask him "why do i have an enlarged spleen", then come back again and tell us more. Good luck

Hi. I have PV and my spleen is 16.5cm and I don't have much trouble with it. The normal size is 11cm so yours is not that bad xx

Karen1970 profile image

Yes you will and stop smoking weed as your spleen will be the least of your worries in years to come...

Hi, my consultant told me that the spleen gets enlarged because with MPNs the bone marrow is making too many blood cells and they get "dumped" in the spleen which then struggles to get rid of them all. I suggest you ask your doctor about this. Best wishes, Frances.

It depends, that is generally true of PV patients and to a lesser degree ET patients. With MF the spleen enlarges because it produces the blood as the bone marrow struggles.

Hello Ash 123, you must go back to your doctor and ask for a full explanation as to why your spleen is enlarged and what it means for you, we are unable to give you any further advice on this. Good luck, Maz.
