Been told to take 3 Paracetamols at once for pain relief by neuro dr is that safe?..

thats strange I went to a neurologist and she said paracetamol make migraines worse

I'm waiting for an appointment to see the neurologist to find out if my headaches are migranes or clusters, and was told to take paracetamols but not ibuprofen by the GP. She also gave me a prescription for nasal spray but it's up at the pharmacy waiting for collection, so can't remember what it's called. I don't think they know what they're talking about half the time - very worrying

That's what I thought. My consultant took me off all pain meds last Oct . Haven't taken anything since. Now wants me to take 3 paracetamols and astrong coffee. (I had to stop caffeine 4years ago by another Neuro dr) I'm confused to say the least.

3 soluble aspirin works for me. 1000mg aspirin is indicated in migraine pain I believe (which is 3 of them). The soluble ones can be partly absorbed in your mouth, which is useful in migraine.

Maybe your neurologist meant aspirin?

By the way, I don't think 3 paracetamol would do much harm in isolation as long as the daily maximum dose isn't exceeded. Doesn't do much for me though.

Thanks for your reply... I'm allergic to Aspirin . I cannot see paracetamol being much help too me either. I used to take Tramdol at a high dose and that hardly gave me relief.

I find that paracetamol doesn't help me. However, recently I've found that ibuprofen, usually a couple of fast working Nurofen helps quite a bit with my medication. It stops the swollen feeling at the sides of my head that I get with the blood flow.

Problem is pain killers over a long period of time, are bad for you. They play havoc with kidneys and can give you stomach trouble.

Man this ibuprofen used to work for me but with the passage of time it quit working and does not work any more

as i am suffering from cluster headache for the last 17-18 years

Paracetamol does not works for me

Asprin if taken as soon as the symptoms of cluster headache starts, Yes 2 tablets of asprim work just perfectly

but after the C H started, Nothing works really

My episodic CLUSTER headache is about to start in the month of May to August and I have got sumatryptan tablets in advance as someone of you people said that it works

If I can recognise a migraine as soon as is threatening ( I become really sleepy the day before) I take 600mgs of brufen ( 3 over the counter ones) with strong cup of tea and find this effective... my gp is ok with this and has prescribed me 600mg tabs and metocloperamide to use a pre-emptive strike.

I am aware that lot of people cannot take brufen, and it has no effect for me if I leave it too late

For the majority paracetamol and codeine are ineffective in treating migraine. Aspirin and ibruprofen are a better option. But be aware of taking too much! Medication overuse causes rebound headaches and far worsens the problem. 15 doses a month of ordinary painkillers like aspirin, paracetamol, or ibuprofen or 10 doses a month of triptans, opiates, or combination drugs (e.g. paracetamol and codeine) will lead to 'medication overuse.' You really need to see a headache specialist, either at National Migraine Centre or if you are lucky there may be NHS provision in your area. We wish you all the best.

Thanks for the advice.. I'm unable to take aspirin or ibuprofen or triptains . This was prescribed to me by my neurologist last week to take 3paracetamols for pain relief..as long as I don't take no more than 10 a month. I haven taken nothing for pain since Oct 2012. I suffer everyday with migraine . I still haven't taken anything. So I was just wondering if it was safe to take 3 at once.
