90% of my migraines come in the night. If I could stop those my life would be....well life. What causes them? Neuro had no idea :(

These could be caused by low blood sugar? Try having a bowl of cereal before you go to bed and see if that makes a difference.

I went to a conference ran by Migraine Action last year and one of the top migraine neurologists said they have identified that the pain part of the brain is located right next to the sleep part of the brain - although other than this they haven't found out the connection.

Do they wake you up in the night? Or do you get them upon waking in the morning?

Hello thanks for this Yes I watch my blood sugar. And I have had a sleep test done. Nothing showed up. But still they come. At least every other night. I haven't tried cereal. Any particular kind best?

They sometimes wake me. Sometimes I wake with them.

I know they hit within an hour or two of me going to sleep.

On the very very rare occasion of me sleeping in the daytime.....

No migraine

Thanks

Hello Merrill. I second this about blood sugar. So much so, it has prompted a blog. See the one I have just posted for an in depth look at the issue.

Certainly no expert but some suggestions.

I was going to suggest sleep apnoea but they would have picked that up on a sleep study. But you may be getting dehydrated if you breathe through your mouth.

Might be worth googling cluster headaches or hypnic/alarm clock headache to see if they fit.

It may be possible for medication overuse headache to appear overnight if the meds were wearing off but that would require you to be taking regular meds.

My final off the wall suggestion is to check any gas appliances near the bedroom for carbon monoxide. Also worth seeing if you get them away from home as well.

Thank you. Not to sound difficult I hope. I don't sleep with my mouth open. There are no gas appliances. And we have a detector/alarm. Can't say if I get them away from home. Not been anywhere since 1992.

MOH no symptoms of. And no regular meds. Just as and when.

Have been checked for hyping and cluster. Nope

It is a mystery. If I stay awake. No migraine. Circadian rhythm neuro said. But he has no idea how to fix it.

I do appreciate your post (s). Thank you. Xxx

I was waking up with migraines regularly - so I changed my pillows! It was as simple as that...

I know that sounds ridiculous but it really has helped. I used to use two quite thick pillows but I stayed at my Dads' and his pillows were thin - and bingo - no migraine for the whole week I was there so I thought why not - what have I got to lose by trying it at home? And it's worked - in the 8 weeks since I haven't woken with a single headache! I still get migraines but I have broken the cycle of waking up with them.

It's got to be worth a try and what do you have to lose? Good luck....
