I have tried many of painkiller on the market. What do you take to help with the pain?

The only thing that really works for me is a triptan - but I have to either eat or take domperidone (a drug that gets the gut moving) to get sumatriptan to work. Rizatriptan wafers wil usually work on their own but are quite short working. I can only get away with using a triptan 2-4 times a month or I get overuse headaches.

I use aspirin as soon as I experience aura and most of the time it does the trick. I dissolve it in fizzy water to get it in my system as quicky as possible, before the nausea sets in. My neurologist explained that paracetamol etc might not be as effective because migraine can slow the gut down and so the drugs don't get to work as quickly.

If aspirin doesn't work, and the headache phase comes on, I then take Eletriptan.

i take paracetamol at the first sign of one (if i'm lucky enough to actually get an aura) and if that doesn't work then i'll take Imigran - my blog also says what else i've been on :o)

for me the only thing that works is Triptan, i take 100mg sumatripan with attacks or if they hit me fast i use the immigran injection pen.

My new "medication recipe" is - 900mg of soluble aspirin dissolved in coke (helps it get into your system quicker) if I think it's a headache or not a bad migraine. If it's definitely a migraine then I take 100mg sumatriptan (in tablet form), domperdidone, and naproxen to kick it's butt. Triptans were my life saver - but be careful - I've just suffered my first attack of Medication Overuse Headache (where you take too much medication over a prolonged period and as a result it causes chronic daily headache!) so don't eat them like sweets!

Definitely worth a trip to the GP to see if you can get something more effective to treat the pain. Good luck with it!

the only drug that works for me are 'Triptans' I vomit non - stop with my Migranes so am unable to keep tablets or medicine down at all so I use 'Imigran - Sumatriptan Injections' i self inject at the first opportunity. these are the only drug that has ever worked for me and i would not be without them. they are fantastic, for me anyway I also have epilepsy and Triptans are not recommended as they can bring on seizures in people that already have them, but my Migranes are so severe, and nothing else works, the Dr has kept me on them, he really didnt want to but im happy to take the risk as without them I am hospitalised every time. I would not be without them.

I take soluble paracetamol in coke/pepsi 1000mg and 2 Domperidone to get it into system at start headache or aura. Then if it continues into a migraine proper -Frovatriptan. Remember triptans ARE NOT painkillers - only the analgesic meds will touch the pain, the triptans are working on the blood vessels. I used to use sumatriptan but found it too short acting whereas Frovatriptan (at the suggestion of the National migraine centre) is longer acting -or else the migraine can last for days.

I am struck that dradvent mentions having taken lots of different painkillers -so the issue of rebound may already have happened - esp if codeine has been involved?

I have chronic migraines so I take Sumatriptans only twice a week. The rest of the week I grin and bear it with cold compresses, biofeedback, reiki and rest.

When the triptans have got me over the worse and I am left with a "bad headache" I often find that Nurofen Migraine which, according to the packed is something called Ibuprofen Lysine, usually helps. Tesco and Sainsburys also do their own version of this which is cheaper than the Nurofen one.
