Sick of it

These migraines are making me depressed!! I’m in school full time with a son that has started elementary school. I have a pretty busy schedule everyday.

Migraines are making it hard for me to do anything!! I have had this same migraine for two weeks straight, in the same location. I go to sleep and wake up with it!

I’m now trying to do school work but has been on this one question for over an hour because every time I try to think about the answer, my brain hurts.

I also hear (and feel) this “fluid-like” noise coming from the back of my neck & going down my back.

This is not helping my anxiety at all! I’m so tempted to leave this assignment and go to the Er!

Hello beautifulgirl. I am so sorry to hear of the difficulties you encounter at the moment. I am not a health professional but from what you are writing it sounds that you are very stressed right now and that could explain why your head has been hurting for so long now. I don't know what is your background in relation to acute and preventive medication for migraine but you need help, I believe that seeking help from your emergency department may not be the best solution. You need to rest with an ice pack on your head. Do you have friends or family who could help with your son? I seem to understand that you manage to sleep at night? If this is the case, that is at least a good thing but also, I don't think (and again, I am not a health professional) this is migraine but tension headaches. Or this could be a mixture of both, when one goes the other on starts. They can be as bad if not worse than migraines. Be careful with using too much medication. Please, do take care!

I also get migraines like this - I think if I didn't have the pain, I could get all the things done I need to do! But the pain is showing me I have to stop and rest and reset my mind. If anxiety is an issue for you, you must get some help to deal with it. See your doctor. Even though your life is very busy, it doesn't need to be so stressful - it is how you think about things that makes the difference. I know this sounds a lot easier said than done, but I think you should consider it.

It could very well be tension. I was describing it to my mom as if there was a tight back wrapped around my head.😭

Thanks for the reply! I’m VERY stressed! I just started a preventative medicine this past Thursday, which is Magnesium 500mg. Of course I haven’t noticed a difference yet. I asked my dr about recommendations for pain meds until the magnesium start to work, but I haven’t heard back yet.

I did eventually go to the Er. They did a CT of my neck & everything was normal. So I’m started to think this anxiety and stress is causing tension around my neck and back & is pressing on a nerve(s).

I know you’re not a health professional but any recommendations for pain? I’ve tried ibuprofen 800mg but no help

Are you able to do some exercise like running, jogging ? If you can then I am confident that the pain will be manageable with the help of Paracetamol & Ibuprofen. You can ask your doctor to prescribe Triptans (like Rizatriptan), but you shouldn't take these more than two times a week. I won't recommend codene based medicine as it would do more harm than good in the long run.

I’ve tried the triptans but none work so now I’m back to square one

Hello. As far as I know, from what I've read and being told, the brain can't sustain a migraine attack for longer than 72 hours. This means that after 3 days, if your headache persists, your migraine has morphed into a tension headache, or another type of headache. This doesn't stop further migraine attacks to develop as well. It all ends up as a big blur and it just feels like the migraine never stops.

I am not sure why you're taking only Magnesium as preventive. This is not proven that it works and if a doctor gave you this, you should look for another doctor. Magnesium should be taken as well as a medication, if you wish. Medication as preventive, such as tricyclic anti-depressants or else, take at least 6 weeks to start working, if they do at all. On top of this, if you have taken too much Ibuprofen, you have what is called 'over the counter medication overuse', which gives you rebound headaches. Ibuprofen hasn't work for me for quite a few years now, because I took it for too long (decades).

Do you have the possibility to see a headache specialist? If you have a diagnosis for migraines, they will tell you how to go about it and may even advise you to get some nerve blocks injected. That may help.

There are several types of triptans. If the triptans you have tried didn't work, it could be for several reasons: you tried the wrong ones, you took it too late, or maybe it wasn't a migraine. Triptans don't work on all headaches (they are not painkillers as such) and not every time. I am on one at the moment, took it several times, worked well and last time I took it, barely took the edge of the pain.

I was dead serious when mentioning an ice pack on your head and rest. If you have an ice pack that you can fill with ice cubes, put it where it hurts, sit down, feet up. Watch something easy on tv, try to arrange for someone to look after your son for some hours and think about your breathing and relax as much as you can. Above all, you have to find the right doctor. All the best!

My doctor did prescribe the magnesium by itself, my pcp that is. I have tried the triptans that was prescribed by my headache specialist but it did not help. She also told me the insurance company probably won’t approve me for Botox which suck😭 I’ve had no luck with seeing a headache specialist & actually finding a solution to the issue. She basically just told me to keep a headache diary.

It could be possible that I’ve taken too much ibuprofen. The med has been my go to since a teenager due to PMS symptoms. Lately, I’ve been popping 800mg of it when I have a headache/migraine. It’s been making the headache worse.

I’ve tried a bunch of stuff for preventative. Propranolol, CoQ10, and maybe two antidepressants that I forgot the name of.

I’m desperate to try something new. I just don’t want it causing a new issue somewhere within my body.

Hello Beautifulgirl. Did your doctor offer you steroid nerves blocks as injections? This is your best bet if you want to stop the vicious circle of ibuprofen. One way or another you will have to stop ibuprofen when taking preventive drugs, or you don't go anywhere. Regarding the triptans, as I mentioned before, there's like 10 different types of triptans. Did you try all of them? The other thing is that when you take a triptan, you need to rest. In my experience triptans don't work when you don't. Myself I took ibuprofen for over 30 years until it wasn't working anymore. When stopping it, I realised how sick it was making me. Even now, months after I've stopped using it, when I try again 'just to see' it still doesn't work and the worse is that it makes my headache worse and longer.

Do try the ice packs and rest, research has been done on it and they rank ice packs to stop a migraine attacks almost as good as triptans. I wish I would know a medication for headaches and migraines, I'd be very rich! :) Take care!
