I was on it two years ago as a drug trial the spaced out feeling lasted about two weeks. I came off it six months later. Im now back on it and had no problems this time.

I was on it for 2 years - you have to increase and decrease very slowly - NMC told me to decrease small doses with a good month inbetween changes.

I got to 500mg bd any more was too sedating but that dose was fine and did have a positive impact on my migraines.

I came off it because it absolutely ruined my hair - hidden in the side effects is that it makes your hair grow more curly and as someone with wavy hair anyway - i had corkscrews of straw growing out of my head!!! Took another 2 years to restore! But if you don't get the hair effects it is worth trying.

My doctor wanted me to try sodium valproate for my migraines and I was nervous about trying it for a couple of months then decided to give it a go. For a few days I noticed the strong sedative effect even on the smallest dose and felt I wouldn't be able to drive so left it for a couple of weeks. When I tried it again I had the sensation of my skin crawling especially on my chest and arms. I couldn't sleep as I was scratching and also seemed to feel unwell and hot. I tried taking it with antihistamine but it made no difference to the skin crawling or temperature. When I saw my own doctor he told me to come off it. A week before another doctor had said to persevere with half the dose but I was relieved when I finally came off it and felt a lot happier in myself as I found it made me depressed as well.
