Tween/teen migraines and anxiety/stress

Hello Migraineurs,

Do any of you have stress or anxiety triggers for migraine? My kids, 11 and 13 seem to. Both are in trouble with the school for lack of attendance. We are working on covering ourselves for that, but it is a source of stress for them. My younger one is also gifted, which adds to her anxiety. The older is doing neurofeedback, PT, and relaxation techniques to help reduce the tension in hey body. It helps a bit. My youngest won't do any of that and cannot explain why. Hey main symptoms are light/sound/smell/touch sensitivities and a general feeling of not being well. I'm looking for something for her to make her feel functional. Any ideas? BTW, she cannot take the usual oral preventative (Topamax, amitriptyline, etc) because they mess with neurotransmitters that we are trying to balance with other medicine.

Thanks guys!

I would suggest magnesium 3x daily. It has helped to reduce my migraines. There are a number of types, when I switched to magnesium glycinate it really helped. You could ask about Feverfew, not sure if it is safe in kids

Also counseling to help them deal.with the impact it has on them.

Good luck!

I have been trying supplements as well as standard preventatives-currently on beta blockers as my migraines have increased in my 60s . Can you tell me how much magnesium you take please and the source? Thank you

My oldest gets 400mg magnesium oxide (used to be citrate, but we changed for some reason). Neither seem to make difference for her. Migrelief has feverfew in it and she had a bad reaction to it. She also gets 400 mg riboflavin since that was in the migrelief, too. It doesn't seem to make a difference either. My youngest refuses to take extra pills. She hates taking things. Both are in counseling. It helps with life, but not migraines at this point. I'll look into different forms of magnesium. Maybe we'll get lucky! Thank you!

So for maybe 10-15 years I took magnesium oxide on a single dose and it did nothing for me.

I then listened to the "heads up" Podcast and changed what I was doing. There are migraine Specialist in the UK and they discuss many topics that have changed my life. It is free, just download an App. I use Castbox And then search for the Podcast.

Also look up world migraine summitt They have a 1 week free ( it might be this week or next week) summit with migraine Specialist world wide. They are recorded workshops, all online.

Ok so I was told we can take a Maximum dose of 1500 if needed. But for me it is more about how many times I take it a day, not the dose. So I take it 3x everyday, sometimes 4x. All of my migraines have gotten less painful and less often.

I take Doctor's choice 250mg magnesium glycinate. I order it online. I take Imitrix 100mg ( normal dose is 50mg pill) and Imitrix injections when really bad. The injection have kept me out of the emergency room.

The Podcast will go over all of this.

I also started drinking hot peppermint tea when I feel the migraine coming on and I have a roll on pepermint oil that I roll on the back of my hand and smell when I feel a strong headace or when I am in a room with some strong perfume. I make sure I eat every meal and drink at least 40 oz of water daily. I do not have any food triggers that I know of. I also started using ice on my neck when it is very bad.

The other thing is if some treatment is not working I stop it. I have done so many things to help me and they don't work.

Make sure she does not have back and ir neck pain. This is one of the biggest reasons we have migraines.

Hope these tips help get relief.

Thank you! I'll look into the podcast and summit. I'd like to stop all the supplements, test her blood levels for guidance, and then restart them. I can understand how it's not necessarily the dose but the frequency of intake for most supplements, as they are water soluble. It's a good thing to consider. My oldest does have a lot of neck strain leading to most of her headaches. If we can decrease that he headache goes down, but not away. PT is helping greatly for that piece. She wakes up with all the symptoms, though. She will be feeling better in the evening, not the best, but very functional. Then morning comes and she is miserable until early afternoon. We haven't been able to figure it out. Maybe magnesium and riboflavin at night in addition to morning will help. Thank you for that thought!

My other daughter is a gifted mess. She anxiety that prevents her from doing things she used to enjoy. We are working on that and the meds we have tried messed with neurotransmitters that her behaviorist is working on stabilizing. She will not tolerate an injection, which nixes the next best plans that I know of. She's the one resistant to pills, so I don't know if i can add supplements at another time of day. I'll try. thank you for your input!!

I can feel a migraine waiting at lunch time and as soon as I take the magnesium it goes away.

Also.. if she is waking up with a headace she needs a snack before bed.

You have your hands full but it sounds like you are doing a great job! I have learned so much from the Podcast!take care

I thought maybe I could add a pic here, but guess not is the podcast data-driven health radio at headsuphealth.com?

Nope.. it's called "heads up". Its a green background with a person holding their head. You might need to try a different App if don't find it.

Good luck!

Hi Hidden , I understand how hard it is to engage children in relaxation exercises and the like. I came across the Woebot App which is based on CBT and developed by MIT. Maybe that's something to try. I don't know if it suits her age but it is a bit more engaging than just sitting there and listening to a relaxation exercise.
