Hi there...what were her outcomes? Was there any damage to her brain?

Hi..

We are a year post her recovery. Thank God so far she is doing well developmentally. She is now 14 months and already walking, playing role games (for example she tries to feed her animal toys with a spoon)

No talking yet, just the first syllabus of the words. But this is ok i guess because other kids at this age dont talk yet.

She is a little behind in'fine motor skills because i notice that she cant point with the finger yet.

She is a happy girl with a lot sence of humor.

How old is your baby?at what stage are you now?hospital or back at home? i hope you and your baby are as blessed and lucky like me and my daughter..

Hi! Great that baby is doing great! My daughter had bacterial meningitis with Sepsis 3 days after birth and was also in hospital for three weeks. Thank God she defied all odds and came through it well. She has hit all her developmental milestones as yet save for sitting unsupported (she just made 6 months). She has been having right side Torticollis since she was 4 months so I think head tilt is kinda delaying her balance to sit unsupported. Otherwise,BM is a disease that can stress the life out of you. Bless you

Wow so great to hear good stories..did she have any brain damage?

No,she didn't get brain damage otherwise she would not hit milestones at 3 months for example ...moving eyes,sounds...turning eyes, body posture....She is a healthy 6 month old now apart from the Torticollis which is delaying her unsupported sitting. Qn: Did doctors do a scan of your baby's brain to rule out or confirm some form of brain damage??if not,how could they confirm some form of brain damage by mere observation?? Let me know how they came to that conclusion. Thanks

Hi Sarah88,

My little son contracted ecoli meningitis at day 2 of his life. Spent four weeks in Hospital and another 6 weeks IV Antibiotic at home. Many occasions Drs wrote him off. My advice is take each day as it comes , give your little one a lot of support as they are weak. In terms of brain damage , they said the same stuff about my son but he is only 12 weeks now and I would suggest do not read it too much. Drs can see maybe structural damage but they cannot predict functional one and kids always have the advantage of their brain developing comparing to us..

Hello! I've got a 12 week son too who's just got over Ecoli BM he got at 3 weeks old. Same as other people on here, very very ill at one stage. 1 week in CAT unit a further month of IV infusions. That was about 9 weeks ago and we only just got around to him having his usual checks as we were in the hospital so long. So far he's focusing, cooing, reaching for things(not getting them but trying) and doing things a normal 3 month old baby should. He suffers with benign seizures but that's to do with silent reflux and has nothing to do with the meningitis. The thing I have struggled most with, with the whole process is not knowing where the BM came from. Personally I still get panicky thinking about it because I can't prevent something happening again when I don't know where it came from. We had our meningitis follow up are meeting last week, which in the U.K. They do 6-8 weeks post event, and they are happy with him just now:. Still watch and wait, but I'm gonna treat him like normal until we're proven otherwise. His immunity has taken a hammering so we're careful who's around him and what he's exposed to. And he tires out easily. But apart from that he's doing well. It has been the darkest thing as a family we've ever faced, after it taking 6 years to conceive him having him almost snatched away from us was horrific. But he fought it and were on the right path. Whatever the outcome. I don't care, he's my little man and we will cherish him whatever hand we get dealt. ❤😊

After my daughterg's recovery, she had an MRI which showed no abcess and also showed normal morphology of the brain. I am aware that minor deficits may not appear on an mri but watching my baby developing good so far, gives me strength and faith that she will be able to reach highly cognitive skills in the future (talking, writing etc

Hi, my little man contracted bacterial meningitis and septicaemia at 1 day old.

They could not grow the strain that caused it. They believe it was GBS as I had it in a previous pregnancy. Why I was not treated for it when in labour this time round I still do not understand. I was told It all depends on what hospital you go to.

When they did their initial scans they could see a lot of swelling on his brain he is currently 8 months now and not showing any signs of brain damage. He does seem to have a bad temper but then most babies can be like this so trying not to read to much into it at the moment.

The only thing he has at the moment is cows milk protein allergy, not sure if it is from all of the antibiotics it was misdiagnosed as reflux for almost 5 months.

Hope your little boy is doing ok x

I think the CMPA was something to do with all of the antibiotics that he was on as they did not know what strain of meningitis he had so they gave him everything. The so think it may have been GBS though.

He's nearly 9 months now and most nights he is being sick... not sure if it is related or just normal baby behaviour ☹️

Sorry to hear that Sarah, How do they know that these parts of his brain have been affected is he showing any signs?
