Hi could anyone help about universal credit being taken to pay for residential education college?

my 21 daughter is in a residential college for 38 weeks of the year , and social care have just told me that she has to pay towards the cost , which will leave her with just £30 per week universal credit . Apparently they can do this as she now receives universal credit?

Hello, whilst I have no knowledge in the area of residential living, I do support a couple with LD who are in receipt of UC. I do find them (UC) to be very helpful by raising queries on the online journal. They usually reply in a very timely manner and I have never had an issue. It might be useful to speak to UC direct via this route. I hope this helps. Good luck :)

when my son was at a residential college 2015-2019 the local authority originally took my sons ESA (we have yet to move to UC) leaving him with just over £24 a week. About 6 months later they realised that because they had named the college on his EHCP they couldn’t do that and refunded all the money they had taken. The rules might have changed but I would definitely challenge it.

Hi interesting to know. I wonder if the same rule applies to his DLA dose this need to be named on the EHCP when switching to universal credit?

sorry I can’t help with this as we haven’t moved over to UC yet. I would mention it to be on the safe side. However when my son was at college his DLA/PIP wasn’t paid for the weeks he was at college and I had to phone to claim for the weeks he was at home during the holidays.
