I am posting about an opportunity to participate in a research study looking to explore the experiences of family carers who care for a family member with an intellectual disability who uses the internet and social media.

My name is Kate Tweats, and I am the lead researcher for this project. I am a Trainee Clinical Psychologist with the University of Edinburgh and the NHS, and I am completing this project as part of my Doctorate of Clinical Psychology.

The purpose of the research is to find out more about the experiences of family carers who support family members with an intellectual disability to use the internet and social media. We currently know very little about these experiences and would like to find out more. It is hoped that by taking part in this research, participants will be helping us to better understand the experiences of family carers who facilitate internet use for family members with an intellectual disability. It is intended that the results of the research will be used to inform services about how they can best provide support to families who facilitate internet use.

To take part in the study, participants need to be:

-A family carer. This means that the participant will be a parent, including adoptive or stepparent, grand-parent or sibling of someone they care for.

-The participant cares for their family member with a mild or moderate intellectual disability. For the purposes of this study, the cared for member of the family must have either received a diagnosis of an intellectual disability or have contact with learning disability services.

- The family member either currently uses or has used the internet and social media.

-Both the participant and the cared for member of the family are over 18.

If participants decide to take part, they will be asked to take part in an online interview that will last between 45 and 60 minutes. The interview will be arranged at a time that is mutually convenient.

I have also included a poster advertising the study which includes details on how to get in touch if you are interested.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this information. If you have any further questions or queries about this study then please do not hesitate to contact me, I would be happy to discuss this project with you.

Kind regards,

Kate Tweats
