Returning to UK with adult child with learning disability after a few years away...what advice do you have?

We are just about to move to the UK from Canada (will rent in Bracknell Forest initially but will move somewhere in the south west at some point).

What are our educational options, do you have any tips for us and anything we need to do or claim? In Canada she attends full time school until 21.

For information, daughter is academically around age 5 but socially very much higher, although she does have speech and language delays as well.

I became an expert in finding all that was available when she was younger, now I feel like a complete beginner. Any and all advice appreciated!

I would apply for deputyship for property and finance and health and well-being, you will need to apply for benefits for her and whether she needs adult education or supported living for residential care or nursing care I don’t know what her needs are. I would speak to the carers association and mencap helpline for help and support as well and I would speak to adult social services in the area your moving to to find out what help and support they can give you. It’s hard to advise as I don’t have all the information but this is a start. Good luck

Hi I would suggest registering her with the local gp and ask for a referral to the learning disability team who can assess her iq or just take on board assessments you have already from Canada ( don’t know if they will be recognised here) and from that you should get/ask for a social services referral for future care. Although not very nice I would make lots of references to what she cannot do as otherwise you will not get much help. I don’t have any experience of moving out of area but some comments on here say it can be difficult so keep that in mind if you plan on moving about in the uk. Also get benefits and pip sorted, appinteeship so that you can manage her benefits and third party signing in her bank account. Good luck

I moved back to Man/ter in 2020 with 50 yr old son to get Autism Assessed. Result was positive, but I have found difficulties in getting support. You will need to keep contacting offices to avoid being by-passed. Be Firm. West country seems good with this ,I believe. Good wishes flaounis4T
