Hello!
My name's Victoria and I'm one of the Campaigns Officers at Mencap.
Getting the right support from social care is vital to helping people with a learning disability and their families live happy, healthy lives.
But the current pandemic has highlighted just how fragile social care support can be.
We surveyed 1,069 family carers of people with a learning disability to find out how they have been affected during the coronavirus lockdown by cuts to social care.
We found that 7 in 10 (69%) people with a learning disability had their social care cut or reduced. And 4 in 5 (79%) family carers have been forced to take on more unpaid care for their family member.
This is why we've launched our #SocialCareCrisis campaign. We want the government to properly invest in social care and work with organisations, like Mencap, to make sure the social care system works better. There has been under-investment for a decade now and this is simply unacceptable.
There are two quick things you can do to help us.
1. We have kept our #SocialCareCrisis petition open, so if you haven't added your name yet, you can sign it here: secure.mencap.org.uk/en-gb/...
2.Sign up to be an everyday activist with Mencap. That way, we can keep you up to date with our #socialcarecrisis campaign and further actions you can take part in. You'll be joining the Mencap family of activists - and the more of us there are, the stronger we are!
