Hi sedlywilson and welcome. Does your gp surgery do health checks? I would give the surgery a call or pop in whichever is easier and ask if you can have a health check with the nurse or an appointment with the nurse practitioner and you can discuss the issues regarding your asthma with them. The nurses have more time and are very good. I hope this helps.

Ask if you can get an appointment with the surgery nurse to check out your asthma.

Hello sedleywilson

This must be very frustrating for you. Can you try to make another appointment? Perhaps you could see a different GP? Whenever I go to the GPs I seem to see a different doctor each time. You may find that different GPs are better at listening.

If you are concerned about your health at all then your GP surgery is the right place to go for help.

Seeing a nurse is also a great idea. If you tell the receptionist what you want to talk about then they will be able to make sure you see the right person.

Is there anyone who could go with you to your appointment? Perhaps someone in your family, or a friend that you trust. They may be able to make sure the GP listens to you, and checks your chest.

Best wishes

Hi! I think it sounds like a good idea to ask the GP surgery for an appointment to talk about your asthma.

It can be hard to speak up when you're with the GP, especially if you feel rushed. If you feel able to, do let them know what you need at the time - maybe you need them to slow down, or ask you about your chest and asthma.

If you have a learning disability or autism, and need some extra support from your GP surgery, you can ask them to write down what you need on your notes, so they always know for next time.

You could ask them to make sure you have enough time - maybe by asking for a double appointment, or ask them to remember to always ask you about your chest?

If you have an annual health check, you could also ask to talk about what support you need to manage your asthma through the year.

Hope that is helpful.

Best wishes

Also, if there is a GP or nurse that knows you, you could ask the receptionist to help you make sure that you see that person. They won't always be able to do it - but many people with a learning disability find it helpful to see someone who knows them well.
