Work and employment advice – tell us what you'd find useful

18 to 24 November is Learning Disability Work Week (phew – that’s a mouthful, let’s just call it LDWW from now on).

This year it’s all about spreading the message that people with a learning disability make great employees when they have the right support.

We’re hoping to create some helpful guidance about finding employment. Before we start work on this we’d really like to ask you what you would find useful:

> What questions do you have?

> Is there something you know we really need to include in there?

> Do you have top tips, anything that you wish you'd known earlier?

This guidance should (hopefully) be available during LDWW and I will share it here.

Please just share your ideas here, or email me at community@mencap.org.uk

'Work' expert event

coming soon

Keep an eye out for Paul, who works for our Lifestyles and Work team, who will be here to answer all your work related questions from the 25 to 29 November. More info on this soon.

Many thanks

Sarah

Hi, I would love my son to gain some purpose and fulfilment from some type of employment either payed or voluntary. I have a few questions

1. Are employers willing to take on someone with a severe mental illness?

2. High levels of support would be needed for him to undertake even basic roles. Who would support him?

3. How would the support be funded?

Best wishes.

Interested in hearing more about this too. My son might well benefit from some work experience IF he has the right level of support. His levels of concentration are very poor and he does not, seemingly, have the ability to motivate himself, but he leads a very boring life, with very few friends but, like Shue's son, might well gain some purpose and fulfilment from some type of employment. He has tried volunteering in a charity shop but soon gave up.
