Being told what to do
Hello jesspooley ,
How are you? I have a different type of cerebral palsy to you. I have spastic diplegia. I have had two children , now aged 21 and 24. I remember the worry and fear over would my body cope and how would the doctors treat me as a pregnant disabled woman?
I have never had a carer but perhaps she was trying to spare you the hurt of further disappointment following your miscarriage? To me, what she said was cruel and unkind? Perhaps its time to look for a new carer? I think you need positive support and kindness not negativity?
My advice is to try and find a friendly Gp so you can talk over any possible issues for you? Many women experience miscarriages. It may not be linked to your disability in any way.
Maybe what you need is a consultant who has experience with helping disabled ladies manage pregnancy?
From my very limited experience it was manly about minimising the risk to me and the baby? I was asked to use a walking stick because i fall frequently? which put the fear of god into me at the time but i managed.
You are a young woman don't let ignorant people dictate your life path? Do you have support around you other than your carer?
Good luck and best wishes xx
I am sure your carer only has your best interests at heart, but she needs to remember it is your life and you decide what you do with it. So if you would like another baby - go for it!
I have mild spastic diaplegia and have a gorgeous 2 yr old girl. It hasn't been without its challenges, but that is the same for every parent, ours maybe more physical but it just makes us more resilient.
There is still much ignorance out there. Someone recently commented, " I didn't think people like you could have children."
I have never been pregnant but in my opinion, it is your body, your child and most certainly your decision. Don't let your decision be influenced by your career. Speak to your GP about the effects pregnancy on your body and once you have obtained this information make a conscious decision based on what your GP tells you. Don't let any of your careers influence the decision
