Mouth care - What would you like to see in a video?

NicoleLeukaemiaCare profile image

Hi all,

We're currently working on developing a video about mouth care and blood cancer. Is there something you would have loved to know about mouth care when you were receiving treatment?

We would love to hear the thoughts of our members on the forum to find out what the best information would be.

I have not yet started treatment but shall possibly do so soon.

Mouth concerns: fortuitously, we attended a Leukaemia Care conference soon after my diagnosis. There, a fellow attendee brought up the subject of mouth care i.e. it was not a planned part of the conference.

The expert panel then advised that it is wise to have as much dental work completed, even if the dentist would normally leave it, before having treatment for Leukaemia.

Had we not attended that conference and heard that exchange, I should not have been having a good tooth out next Tuesday.

Because of hearing that exchange, I alerted my Dentist who then emailed my CLL consultant who advised I should have the tooth out, as there is an underlying minor infection in the gum.

I know the right thing is being done. It is because of a chance exchange at a conference which I could easily not have gone to. I have read booklets and articles about CLL and treatment and never seen any reference to mouth care.

It’s brilliant you are writing something. Thank you

My dentist advised swilling with a mug-full of hot boiled water with a half teaspoon of salt in it. It relieves soreness and heads off an infection if you use it as soon as you feel anything wrong.

What a great idea. This topic is not normally covered and information is hard to find. Macmillan do provide good information. here: macmillan.org.uk/informatio... i had my own teeth shored up before treatment, however my mouth was often sore during treatment and taste was not good. advice on what can ease this would be helpful

A timely post as I sit here with a broken off tooth ;-) Rather than information of mouth care during treatment alone, Some information to hand for immune compromised people requiring invasive work would be helpful.
