Sorry for the blurred images, these are taken from a session yesterday at the RCGP annual conference. interestingly HealthUnlocked use was a case study example of how modern on-line patients become empowered.
The session was quite uplifting, it was full, and speakers where discussing patient doctor communication in the era of internet access and peer to peer support.
The concluding statements (above) force GPs to take a look at how they may adjust to balance relationships and encourage patients to be able to participate in healthcare discussions. What became clear to me is that the RCGP were keen to broaden the horizons of GPs to encourage collaboration and information sharing during a consultation and relationship with their patients. Not an easy task when patients with rare conditions may seem to know more than the GP or have conflicting information. The go to place for validation recommended by RCGP for both patients and GPs is patient.co.uk. Interestingly though, from listening to discussion by the RCGP speaker; Patient.co.uk material is still only prepared by clinicians, It would appear that even they still have to balance information to ensure that patient perspectives and experience are captured in their authoring of information.
All this bodes well as I embark with Leukaemia CARE to empower GPs to learn more of the challenges faced by people living with blood cancers and the importance of early diagnosis.

We are now continuing "Spot Leukaemia" by partnering with RCGP to host in person learning events for GPs and are launching the Pilot with the Midland RCGP faculty in January, we hope to roll these out across regional faculties from there. youtu.be/49v0vFGel6k
GPs are often given a bad rap, It is a two way street I feel, and we are all competing for time and a slice of the same pie.
