My husband has stage 3 kidney cancer. He gets scans every six months without contrast. We were told the contrast is not good for the existing kidney. I worry that without contrast they can’t see everything or may miss something.

My CT scans are all without contrast. I believe this is based on having one kidney/risk of contrast. In 2015 I had liver Mets. To be able to have surgery they needed a more defined CT. Based on Kidney function I was able to have the CT with contrast. As a precaution, they gave me a liter of fluids before and after.

I have now moved to a new location, new oncologist and they do MRIs.

I go every 3 months and I get contrast. I have stage 4 and one kidney. They do check my kidney function before I get the contrast. I also do a 3 hr hydration before.

Same with wife. Plus they also recheck BUN and CREATININE 48 hours after. Her Scans are very 6 months.

Always with and without contrast every 6 months. Although despite having positive margins, with the current mess the insurance business is, they denied my last MRI and CT. we are still fighting it.
