Sister ICU Day 50

Today is 50 days since my sister was placed on a ventilator, we have most certainly had good and bad days. She has had a trachy fitted for a few weeks now and they finally started to try wean her off the ventilator. She is on very low pressure support and 28% oxygen, the past 2 days she has been unable to sleep despite being given sleeping medication, so she is not coping very well with the weaning as she is completely wiped out. Has any one else experienced a sleeping issue with weaning?

Once I woke from coma, I didn’t sleep for 3 days solid - exhaustion finally took over. The problem is that any sleeping pills might exacerbate delirium - it’s a real balancing act

It took my husband around 2 months to wean off the ventilator after having his tracheostomy so it sounds like your sister is doing quite well. My husband was always tired in hospital and rarely managed to sleep very well. I think it's such a strange environment with lots of beeping that it is really hard to get a good night's sleep. I think being in bed all day also messed up his proper day and night cycles which didn't help.

It's also quite normal to have some not so good days so I wouldn't worry too much xx
