How long can they keep you on a ventilator before it causes more problems

Hi Lori,

I was on a ventilator for 19days, then had a tracheotomy (breathing tube inserted in the throat) for just over 2 months and sedated for most of the first 8 weeks of my 3 months in ICU, my wife was told it was to rest my vital organs and help the body to recover.

The doctors will remove the ventilator as soon as possible to avoid any further risk of infection, but my advice would be to talk to them about your concerns, I'm sure they will be able to reassure you.

best wishes,

Bill
