I was given contaminated blood at age 18 during a 6 pint blood transfusion. I became pregnant with a coil in place at age 23. Fortunately, my daughter was not infected. I was active sexually from around age 21 until around age 32 and luckily my husband was not infected either.

I am now 60 and still here.

It is not impossible to pass the virus to a child. What you will want to do is to make sure that the Mother is in the best possible condition so that her baby is born strong and healthy. That way if the baby is infected it may have more chance of naturally clearing the virus. This is referred to as a "natural clearer" and would happen within 6 months.

It was very lucky that my baby was not infected because as well as being infected prior to her being conceived I also breast fed her for a few months. I very soon became totally exhausted and was forced to stop breast feeding. You may wonder why I breast fed but the Doctors used to tell us that the virus could not be passed to the baby. This is not true as I do know of people who did pass the virus to the baby during pregnancy, birth or feeding. It is classed as very rare but, of course, it does happen in rare cases.

Stay strong

I forgot to mention that I have never been able to have any treatment for the Hepatitis C. This is because I have several different health problems and they are always concerned that by treating the Hepatitis that it may cause one or more of my other conditions to deteriorate.

Despite the fact that I am still here everyone is very different. I must stress that because I knew straight away that I had been infected I have only ever drank alcohol on two occasions. For over 25 years I have reduced sugar intake and for over 15 years I have eliminated sugar. I believe sugar feeds the virus and if I were to start all over again I would definitely follow this same route.

One of my other conditions causes me to suffer with debilitating fatigue. Although this is not good as I cannot do very much at all I strongly believe that the extra sleep and rest that I have been forced to have for over 40 years has certainly played a part in keeping me alive for so long. When you are sleeping it gives your body the opportunity to repair itself. The liver is the one organ that can repair itself as long as you have not yet got cirrhosis. I am sure the extra sleep delayed me from getting cirrhosis. I do now have cirrhosis of the liver but it is certainly not advanced cirrhosis so I still have much hope.

Exercise is equally as important. I have always exercised and been very active. At age 15 an operation went wrong causing it to be extremely difficult and painful for me to walk. I continued to do non weight bearing exercise as it was extremely important to keep as fit as possible.

I am in excruciating pain so I have not been able to follow the best routine for everything. I have had to regularly take strong pain killers for over 40 years. The best policy is to remember is that every toxin that your liver has to deal with - whether it be smoking, drinking, pain medications, etc - means that instead of your liver being able to concentrate on fighting the Hep C virus it will firstly focus on fighting all these other toxins. This will give the Hepatitis virus the chance to infect more cells while your body works on dealing with the other toxins.

I wish you all the best. Stay strong. Sleep and rest plenty.
