I have just had Mimimal Aortic Valve Replacement surgery. I had a tissue valve and the surgeon has described the surgery as a ‘text book’ success.
I spent 3 days in ICU and a further 4 in a High Observation ward. I was only discharged once any AF followed by Sinus Tachycardia was stabilised and under control.
I am only in my fourth day out of hospital but am experiencing continued episodes of High heart rate (over 100). Last night these might have included some Atrial Flutter. I will phone 111 if this prolonged level reoccurs and will inevitably be sent to A&E. It could be that my beta blocker dose needs adjusting.
I should like to hear from anyone who has undergone a similar operation and who has experienced high heart rate problems and/or AF in addition to all the discomfort and pain naturally associated with the procedure.

I suspect you’re right that you need a bit more beta blocker and one of the doctors on your unit may be able to advise that over the phone to save you a trip to the emergency department. Were you given a number for the ward to phone in the first week or so post-operatively?
That said I would only delay phoning 111 if you are feeling okay. if you feel unwell when you heart rate is fast, then you should call 111. It would be worth checking your blood pressure when your heart rate is fast and when it is not if you are able to do so.
Thank you for your reply. I have not had a repetition of that High Heart rate of the other night. I am sleeping a little better and my HR was below 100 for the whole night. Blood pressure has been normal whenever I have tested it. The five minute walks I am allowed even reduce my HR rather than the contrary.
Although I have a number for the the hospital ward I was not invited to use it. I was despatched with quite a comprehensive discharge letter. A week on, my surgery has not yet received it so I have urged them to chase it up! At the very least my medication needs updating as detailed in that document. I am due a consultation with my surgeon in 5-6 weeks and with my local cardiologist in 3 months.
All in all, I’m just so relieved to have been dealt with. I rather think patience is now the order of the day.
I'm glad things have eased a bit. I found I was getting tachycardic (HR>100) whenever I exerted myself in the first couple of weeks or so post operatively so it's good that you're not. I stopped monitoring it, and gradually increased my activity. Six months on I can cycle 30k and swim a mile, albeit slowly.
My follow up with the surgeon got put back to about the three months mark and cardiology...I just had an echo and a letter from the specialist.
I think you're right a lot of patience is needed and then a persistence in pushing yourself a little everyday but don't do that in the first three months. Just let it all heal for now and potter!
