Mitral regurgitation

I have got mitral regurgitation but I do not yet have any breathlessness. I am finding good sleep almost impossible which is one of the symptoms and is leaving me very tired. Any advice or suggestions on what to do would be gratefully received.

Hi Mollie678

I assume saying you have regurgitation it has been diagnosed and as such your doctor would have given you some guidance? I have had a leaking heart valve from birth and had no symptoms until recently into my late 50s. My first symptoms were heart palpitations and increased blood pressure. So I might suggest getting one of the cheap home BP monitors to keep an eye on that? I also felt increasingly tired and even though I felt I had a decent night's sleep I would wake still feeling tired? I noticed sudden physical exercise much harder (like quickly climbing 4+ flights of stairs or chasing the dog).

So I would suggest keeping an eye on it and go see a doctor/consultant if you have any changes, particularly sudden. Also listen to your body and as soon as you start feeling tired doing something stop it. I found in the early stages trying to push through made me feel quite ill for several hours.

Good luck👍

Thanks for the reply. My leaky valve was diagnosed about 8 years ago and generally I feel pretty good but it’s the lack of sleep that drives me nuts!! I’ve tried lots of different things with no success. Having said that, I’m sure that things could be one hell of a lot worse!

morning Mollie678

I have severe mitral valve regurgitation and am waiting on surgery to get it hopefully repaired. I found out 6 months ago that I was most likely born with this issue which until recently hadn’t been an issue I didn’t even know I had it! You will be able to get this fixed if need be so try to stay positive. My sleep is not good at all either and I experience a lot of fatigue. Can I ask how you know for sure that leaky valves cause sleep issues? As this would explain my years of insomnia and broken sleep! Thanks in advance, and take care.

Hello Laguna 23. I cannot be sure but I am a fairly fit and active with no other ailments apart from the leaky valve so I have always assumed that they are linked. If you look at symptoms of mitral regurgitation on this website it lists sleep problems as one of them so I am fairly sure that in my case it is the cause. I was diagnosed about 8 years ago and my sleep problems started about 3 years ago so I don’t think that it’s anything to do with medications. I assume that it started as my valve has got worse. They suggest sleeping sitting up which is easier said than done! Good luck.

Thanks for getting back to me. I’ll have a look into it a bit more as it would answer this ongoing anomaly I have with my sleep. Take care, wishing you a speedy solution and recovery x

Hi Mollie,

sorry I had assumed you were recently diagnosed.

I did wonder if you are on any tablets? When I was first put on Amlopodine I had poor sleep with regular boughts of waking in the night and not being able to get back to sleep. At the time I had recently been diagnosed and just thought it was worry. But when I was changed to Rampiril my sleeping improved.

Poor sleep at times is very common and perhaps it's not your valve that is the root cause? I wish.you luck.
