And tap water

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to velvetD

I avoid tap water cos of the fluoride (sodium fluoride) content.

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply to Matt2584

Jeezus. Water, then.

But you better have equal proof xylitol is fine vs fluoride. Because you eat that, even though it provides no benefit except sweetness.

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to Subtle_badger

I don’t think I really need proof, I just need to look at what is foing on around me in the world and do my own research and make up my own mind on certain things.

I believe that sodium fluoride is in most of our tap water so I avoid it.

You and anybody else doesn’t have to believe fluoride is in most tap water.

As for Xylitol being fine over fluoride, again, my own research.

And it’s not just me that finds Xylitol completely fine. Peppersmith chewing gum also finds Xylitol fine.

“Even though it provides no benefit”

I think you might eat your hat when you do more research.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to Matt2584

Not all areas add fluoride to their tap water, so the tap water might be fine where velvetD lives. Some also filter tap water to reduce the fluoride content.

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to Cooper27

That’s correct, not all areas do have fluoride. I think it’s roughly 75% of the UK’s tap water is fluoridated. Not sure of the figures are correct or what but then again, a lot of figures you read can be wrong depending on the source of that info.

Some people in this poll have even said how they filter water to get rid of fluoride and other crap.

Hi Hidden it was meant to be soft drinks which is the theme of this years Sugar Awareness Week: Whats in your drink? so it's what we call human error so apologies my mistake.

I knew what I meant LOL...

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to

It might be “sugar awareness week; What’s in your drink?” Like fizzy drinks containing copious amounts of sugar or sweeteners like Aspartame which is not good for our health but what about what is in your water?

I think most tap water around the world contains chlorine as well as fluoride (sodium fluoride) which is why I dodge the stuff. Plus also, I find tap water doesn’t taste that nice anyhow.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to Matt2584

Hi Matt, you might be interested to learn that maybe only half the water companies in the UK add fluoride to their water, or at least that's what I was told (I know a few people who work in the industry). Other countries are hit and miss, for example I think France add fluoride everywhere.

All water companies add chlorine to make sure the water reaches your house safely. I personally filter my water to reduce the chlorine, because I don't like the taste of it.

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to Cooper27

So people you know who work in water companies say only a half of UK water add fluoride.

Some internet sources say about 75% of UK add fluoride but this is what they say. There doesn’t seem to be no yes or no answer these days. We’re all in a state of complete confusion, even the authorities. I don’t think none of them have the real answers people look for.

I wouldn’t be surprised if 100% of US tap water was fluoridated because from what I know, or what I think I know.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to Matt2584

I think it depends on your sources :) This is a useful little list of all the postcodes that have fluoridated water. It looks like a lot, but apparently it's only 5 million people in England (so not even 10% of the population) who have it added to their water (none in Scotland or Wales).

uk-water-filters.co.uk/fluo...

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to Cooper27

Thanks for that Coops :).

According to the link, my area is not fluoridated but this does not mean I will start drinking tap water again.

Tap water doesn’t taste as food as coconut water, I find.

Plus also, tap water has more in it than just fluoride, in most areas, like chlorine for one. Why do I want to be drinking bleach?

We might have our salads doused in bleach (according to an article Jerry once posted) but I don’t want to be consuming more through water.

What ever happened to good old water from rivers and streams?

Oh dear that's not so good, I remember when I boiled the kettle in hampshire to make a cup of tea, the kettle fired up and there was a scum on top of the tea ... I think this may be why I went off drinking tea and coffee.

What do you drink? Do you filter the water to take out as much of the unwanted things as possible?

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to pamela22

What part of Hampshire had the scummy water and when was this?

Either our part of Hampshire doesn’t acquire scum or maybe water treatment around here has changed?

I am drinking a coffee right now with hot, hampshire water. No scum on top which is a good sign :).

According to the link Cooper27 provided, there is no fluoride in hampshire waters... I think.

I'm pretty routine in my drinking habits- no more than two black coffees in a day; black tea, green tea, lemon and ginger tea, minty tea once a day; lavender tea at bedtime. Delicious well water, coffee with high protein non-soy non-GMO organic plant milks, an occasional tea, and non-soy non-GMO no-rbst protein drinks. That’s all I ever drink. No junk drinks, ever!

No more occasional glasses of wine either. I never feel well the next day, if though I would only drink one glass. The last glass I had was a year ago. Standard wines routinely contain around 70 additives and pesticides. No wonder I always felt awful for 24 hours after a glass. Wines labeled “natural” do not contain additives or chemicals. If you’re ever going to drink wine, it’s best to have this type.

😂 Yes, it does! I usually get a headache the next day, too. If only wine didn’t make me feel that way because I like the taste. What I also don’t like is to waste the entire next day being totally worthless while trying to recover from the wine flu.

Other is water from my filter jug. I don't drink canned drinks as I usually carry a water bottle with a squirt of lemon or lime juice. If I forget it's usually just still bottled water as I don't like fizzy or sweetened drinks.

I always use filtered water for my drinks because I can often smell and taste the chemicals they use to make it safe and being a hard water area it also stops my kettle from furring up.

Tea,throughout the day with tap water in between, then a milky coffee (decaff) at bedtime.

I drink a lot of Ovaltine does anyone think it could cause me to have Gout attacks

in reply to Gladaven

Hello Gladaven I am sorry as I meant to get back to you with this, I know that malted drinks have sugar and calories whether this is enough to cause gout attacks I do not know I guess a lot depends on your weight. I believe that it's the fat content of the milk that might cause you some concern. I'm a coeliac so malted drinks are a no no for me but I do know that cocoa can be beneficial to gout.

I think that it would be worth asking this as a separate question/post as we have members with gout and members who've had their gall bladders removed.

Energy drinks and sports drinks are rolled into one for me, I drink coconut water which is good for energy and is classed as a sports drink as well.

A source I read once said tennis players should be drinking more coconut water :).

I sometimes have fruit juice. I had apple juice this morning. I read once that apple juice is supposed to be better at waking you up in the mornings than coffee.

The "Other" is water, and fermented products we make like water kefir and kambucha. My wife makes the best ginger ale. It is so good and so easy! She takes organic ginger, shreds it into slivers, and puts into a jar of sugar water and lets it sit. Takes about a week, depends on temperature. Then we decant it into 16 oz bottles (do not tighten, just snug). We end up with a bubbly, zingy ginger drink (we keep the ginger shavings as I chew on them after the drink is gone) have every day. We have no desire to drink any soft drink or colas!! NOTE: the common "ginger ale" only has flavoring. Not sure what that is, but ours tastes so good! And really does settle an upset stomach. Hey, just realized we don't ever get upset stomachs. LOL!

The kambucha is fermented sweet tea. When decanting into the 16 oz bottles, my wife adds a slice of lemon or lime to flavor it. We drink one of these each day too.

Last but not least, I drink 12 oz water w/ Tbs of organic vinegar first thing in the morning, and another just before bed.

I selected tea (standard black tea and herbal “fruit” teas), coffee (decaf with the water method not solvents), and fruit juice, though I don’t drink fruit juice neat because of the sugar content, I dilute by about the same ratio as if it were squash. I don’t drink our local tap water cold because it smells and tastes “chlorine -y” not sure if that’s the fluoride or something else, but we have been buying bottled water for cold drinks. It’s now bothering me about the single use plastic though, I buy the big 5litre bottles so it’s more water to plastic ratio than the small ones but I think I need to look into getting a filter jug instead as the bottles are too much impact on the planet.

I live on the east coast of yorkshire and our tap water is very chalky. We use a filter jug for our boiled water and for drinking, we buy bottled sparkling water. We are considering buying a machine to make our own fizzy water, mainly because we are consciously aware of the growth of plastic bottles. We have recently holidayed I Cape Verde where we were advised not to drink the water due to high mineral content. We were told that it was safe to eat salads but we avoided ice.
