I had postconcussion a couple times before this particular TBI, it ranges from most of the major more noticible problems to people who spent a lot of time with me to become less obvious my first postconcussion almost 10 years ago now took a good 3 months but it was probably 18 months until i most problems were gone. My second was probably about a month for obvious symptoms, but it was a less significant knock. As Jaynekatie said, take one day at a time, i kept doing that and one day i looked back and realised that things were getting easier that i had found tough and slip ups with speech, memory and thinking were becoming less and less frequent.

Dear Sadwife,

I am so sorry to hear of your husband's experience. I appreciate the effects of brain injury impact greatly on the rest of the family too. In answer to your question I have to agree with the previous answers (and information on this subject) and say recovery times vary from person to person. However from personal experience I still have daily problems (similiar to those of your husband) on a daily basis and it impacts greatly on my abilities and quality of life. My brain injury occured in February 2007 so almost six years ago. I still experience the following on a daily basis; fatigue, disturbed & poor sleep, almost constant nausea, dizzy spells (so bad I dare not drive), poor memory & concentration, speech problems, slow thinking and prcoessing, poor comprehension, intolerance of noisy or busy environments etc etc Non of the medical staff I've been involved with can tell me with any certainty that any of this will improve in the future and my GP has referred me for counselling in the hope I might accept this could be the case. I do hope my answer hasn't seemed too gloomy for you, I simply wanted to answer as honestly as possible. I am constantly frustrated that most information about brain injury seems to advise people 'usually' notice improvements after a two year period, I have read very little that acknowledges that for some (such as myself) the

misery can last far beyond that period.

Best wishes to you both.

I forgot to mention the head pains and headaches as I guess I now view them as a given :-)

Hello SadWife,

Thank you for your post.

Post-concussion syndrome can vary from one person to the next, and doctors are often unable to give firm timescales for recovery. While most people will recover within a couple of weeks, there are a significant number of people who will experience longer-term effects.

You can read more about the effects on our website at headway.org.uk/minor-head-i...

We also have a booklet called 'Minor head injury' which gives a good, more in-depth guide to the symptoms of head injury and concussion. You can get a free copy of this through our helpline on 0808 800 2244 or helpline@headway.org.uk. Alternatively, you can send us a private message on here with your name and postal address and we can send one to you.

Best wishes,

Headway.
