My son has a tbi. He had adhd before his tbi and i was wondering does anyone have experience of adhd before tbi or adhd meds after tbi?

My son who suffered a tbi in 2009 when he was 13, had adhd before his accident, the Drs have now decided they want to try him on his old meds for adhd to try an help his impulsivity and concentration. My concerns are many, as i hated him being on meds for adhd when he was younger before his tbi as there are many side affects. So im rather concerned about him restarting them again especially after so long and also with his tbi, as he has many personality & social skills problems now i feel he may not cope. I was wondering if anybody else had used adhd meds since their tbi even if they didnt have adhd before their tbi, and how it has been for them? Im just trying to weigh up the options on whats best for him and helping him progress as he is struggling as he is but dont want to cause more problems!!

Hi clc34,

Thank you for your question.

It might be a good idea to get in touch with our helpline on 0808 800 2244 or helpline@headway.org.uk and ask to speak to one of the nurses. They may be able to give you a little more information on this and talk things through in detail.

Best wishes,

Headway.
