That really is unanswerable. Will depend on your dad's progress and what other demands there are on the system. Only a hands-on Case Manager could even guess I would think.Sorry. Local HW may be able to signpost some useful input from family/carers who've been in a similar situation in your area. Keep asking; you are not alone. Best wishes x

It does totally depend on the severity of the injury and potential for recovery, but in Homerton hospital the average length of stay in the brain injury rehab unit is 4 months, and on average people go in 4 months after their injury (usually after staying in hospital). My boyfriend Richard fitted this exactly, though there were quite a few people who were in there longer. Richard came on very well, and although far from perfect by the time he came home daily living was a lot more manageable than I ever thought it would be.

I hope your dad progresses well.

can only agree with other replies. I ha mine March - was discharged after 10 days - but have lived alone with no help from system - but that is here in France. But then I I had a nervous breakdown and my doc gave me tranquilizers enough for 30 days - but only took them for 15. I returned to UK mid July for 5 weeks to visit estranged son[now no longer estranged and friends afterwards from area I used to live in - that was my best rehabilitation - support from a close network is of tremendous help. Also as Bards said Headway are brilliant, they are giving me telephone help when needed [my cost from here] - they will send you out a whole load of their booklets that cover all aspects - its taken almost 6 months for me - but only because of my unique individual circumstances, but I am so much improved its wonderful. Your Dad with yours and friends & other family support will get there - it may not always be easy and he may have occasional mood swings, but that's par for the course as well. I wish you and your dad well in his rehabilitation.

difficult to say depends on the patient i had a sah in dec 07 woke up on feb 15 08 and finally dischared in mar 09 i am determined and worked hard but the last hospital i was i didnt receive the quantuty of physio i needed hence the longer stay there

After my husbands TBI we were waiting for a bed on a NHS Neuro Rehab Unit but eventually opted for a private unit.

We were told that the maximum stay on the NHS unit is 12 weeks at which point patients are referred to an appropriate service (whatever that is!). However once the 12 weeks are up social services often take a long time to respond with regards to the moving on as there is not much available to move people on to who still require help and support. Hence beds become blocked so people are then waiting in hospital to be referred to a rehab unit. Hospital is not the best place for patients to be once the acute medical stage is over.

We live in Worcestershire but the rehab unit that my husbands referral was to is a Birmingham unit.

I have some sympathy with the issue as there is a serious shortage of beds and support for patients with brain injury hence they often don't get what the need to maximise their recovery. Whilst I have some sympathy it is still very frustrating.

The private rehab unit that we opted for has an average stay of 6 months but we met some that had been there a year plus whereas my husband stayed for just 5/6 weeks as he had reached the stage where whilst he required further help it was beyond the help provided at that centre. We therefore chose to come home and use some outpatient support.

But everybody with a TBI has a different set of needs and a different recovery period so like others have said it will really depend on your dad and his progress. Just ensure that wherever you go you get regular (weekly if possible) case conference meetings where all of the specialists can explain to you and your dad and other family members, how much progress has been made, what is going to happen next and any indication of how long (though they may struggle to answer the last question).

It can also be a postcode lottery as to what is available.

I wish you well and hope that you get to rehab soon and that your dad has a speedy and best possible recovery. It is a very difficult time for all concerned so don't forget to look after yourself too.

Good luck x

My daughter was in ICU for 2 weeks then HDU for another 2.5 months before being transferred to a Neuro rehab hospital. She had been there for 9 months now and can stay there indefinitely (as long as the CCG keep paying!!).
