Hysteroscopy

Hi, I had a hysteroscopy three days ago due to having a bleed. I hadn't had a period for over 17 years and all of a sudden I had what could be classed as a period, including the cramps. This lasted a full week then stopped. My GP referred me to see a gynaecologist on Monday who said he couldn't see anything and I shouldn't be worried but he wants to see me again in 2 months. He said if I had another bleed before that I should call him and get a sooner appointment. I was obviously bleeding after the hysteroscopy but I didn't ask how long I would bleed for. I thought it had stopped yesterday but has started again today and now I don't know whether I should be calling him again or if the bleed is related to the hysteroscopy. Has anyone had this procedure done and if so can you tell me how long you bled for afterwards? Thank you

Hi there,

It's not uncommon to continue bleeding after a hysteroscopy. However, if the bleeding is becoming heavier or continues after a few days, we suggest that you contact your hysteroscopy team for advice, as you may need medication to slow the bleeding down. If things are no better by tomorrow (Friday) lunchtime, can we suggest that you telephone the team for advice so that you do not have to speak to an emergency service over the weekend, who won't have your notes and history in front of them?

Wishing you well,

Team Eve

Hi, last week I went into day surgery to have a hysteroscopy and biopsy done. Consultant said there was nothing there to take biopsy and I shouldn't worry. He said I didn't need to see him again but if I had more bleeding then I should go back to my GP. I had bleeding for a day and a half after the surgery which was expected, then it stopped. Two days later after intercourse I started bleeding again and it has continued for the past two days. I'm not sure what I should do as I feel it is too soon after surgery to go back to my GP. Although the initial bleeding I had, which initiated me being referred to the consultant, came on suddenly, it then seemed to be only after intercourse I bled again for a day. Any advice please?

Hi there. Thank you for your message. We're sorry to hear that this is still going on for you. It may be that it was a bit too soon after the hysteroscopy to have intercourse, as everyone's body heals at a different rate. We suggest making an appointment with your GP just to be on the safe side.

Best Wishes,

Team Eve
