I have stopped wearing lipstick because I learned some brands contain gluten. Is this true and an anyone recommend a GF brand of make-up.?

I think this is sensible. There are some brands available over the internet that are all gf, but I find it easier to buy from the High St - ask to see the product information. Boots keeps theirs handy but you need to ask - and some of their lipsticks are fine. I also use Clarins, again you have to check each range within brands as some are fine and others are not. Ask the assistant to check - and if they are smart they will give you appropriate free samples that are also gf. Don't give up lipstick if you like wearing it - you dont need one more thing to make you feel glum and excluded!

Thank you for the information. I agree with you about buying high street brands at least you can see the colour properly. I will pop along to Boots in the Trafford Centre near where I live and see if they can help. I do miss wearing lipstick and think it also helps to prevent chapped lips in the cold windy weather.

I throw away all my clinique lipsticks after discovering that they all contained wheatgerm.

Just check the box to make sure there are no wheat related products in it. Sometimes wheat is listed as TRITICUM VULGARIS.

I have found all the clarins ones to be ok, Likewise for Lancome's juicy tubes.

Thanks Suzth. It was Clinique lipsticks I was wearing until I learned about makeup containing gluten. My husband is taking me shopping on Saturday to kit me out with some new Clarins makeup, :-) The is a silver lining to every cloud

Sounds like a good plan! Let me know what lipsticks you find that are gluten free :-)

Also be careful with creams that you use on your face as these can easily get into your mouth as well. I've found all the clarins ones to be ok so far.

some Clarins have gluten (or at least the oat protein which I also avoid) as I had a good look just before a wedding. Lots of very fine print to read but only some of their ranges were ok.

I am pleased to say I am free from lipstick as well as gluten.... :-)

Well, apart from one occasion when as a 19 year old lad I went to the Rocky Horror Show - feeling brave and "on the edge" I wore black lipstick and then walked around the corner to see several hundred guys wearing corsets and stockings... :-)

Thanks for the AKA regarding wheat in cosmetics.(TRITICUM VULGARIS) Can honestly say I'd never thought to look at what actually goes into them. Just making sure they. were animal friendly & for sensitive skin/eyes etc. Now realise why I have been having problems with certain products, & the more worrying realisation, is that I'v had that problem since I started using cosmetics. Now 50 & only diagnosed 6yrs ago! So it is with sorrow, that I now have to point out another item to be careful with (Sorry girls!) I'd been in our local Aldi store & being curious looked at their cosmetics range- found Wheat listed in their the contents for mascara? So that would explain why I have problems with my eyes feeling itchy & streaming with 'tears'. Usually use Boots No 7, Max Factor & Yardley- So will be another item to BOLO for when shopping. Grr!

If you email the companies or ask beauty assistants they can quite often confirm if they contain gluten. Many MAC, Burt's Bees, Bare Escentuals and Smashbox lipsticks are ok. Also afterglowcosmetics.com/ and other brands are now promoting gf. I have to say that I too threw many old lipsticks away at first. However, much of the research says that you'd have to ingest a lot of lipgloss or lipstick for your body to react to the gluten. So it's really personal preference. I know many people feel more peace of mind in starting with a clean slate of gf lipsticks. As for other make up most research says unless you are eating the make up then it shouldn't cause a reaction. It's worth remembering that women (& many men!) use up to 20+ chemicals a day what with shampoo, moisturizer, primer, foundation, powder, eye make up, anti-perspiration, body lotion, perfume, hair products etc. So it can often be something else that we react to and causes irritation ie perfum, parabens etc.
