I bought Holland & Barrett gf muesli, but it really seems to upset my stomach. Any reason why this should happen?

Hi mcroucher1, I have checked online (are they Neal's Yard make?) and it only gives added ingredients - so what others are in your packet?

Here are the added:

Other Ingredients:

Rice Flakes (27.3%), Soya Flakes (20.2%), Raisins Thompson Seedless (17.4%)(with vegetable oil), Cashews (3%), Currants (2.8%),(with vegetable oil), Walnuts (2.6%), Flaked Almonds (2.6%), Sunflower Seeds (2.6%)

If there are oats included then these could be the culprit - oats are very closely related to wheat and barley. Some coeliacs include the gluten free versions in their diet when first diagnosed but many have to give them up because they cannot process avenin which is the oat equivalent to gluten. Gluten free oats take out most of wheat and barley gluten contamination but leave in the avenin.

I can't see oats on the ingredients. It mentions that it's packed in a factory where milk, peanuts, sesame seeds and sulphured fruits are handled. Does any of this make sense?

It might be the sulphured fruits - I was reading about coeliacs having problems on a Paleo site recently ...

Managed to find the link - here it is:

Perhaps this may be your problem too. Hope that this link helps.

Vegetable oil sometimes can be derived from wheat.

I react badly to both sulfured fruit and soya...the soya content is high on that muesli.

I have been avoiding soya for some time. There has been a mass of research on soya in recent years and all of it appears to give soya a bad name.

Here are a couple of articles for those who want to find out more:

This one from The Guardian newspaper

guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle...

And this from an independent:

foodrenegade.com/dangers-of...

Yes I found them unsuitable. Tried several times, didnt get really bad reaction just very uncomfortable. They had one batch with gluten found, that was supposed to be sorted. Today purchased Nairns east cook gf porrige oats from Tesco 8pkt no reaction so far. Perhaps if you try them as only oats, could maybe try at first with water only..not the best but worth a try to see if its oats the problem.

thanks for all your help! I'm going to stay away from sulphured fruits to see if it helps. Now I've got find someone to eat my partially used bag of muesli

The only one we get on with is the Narns one from major supermarkets etc. Its very fruity and tastes good. Incidentally as of a few weeks ago the Nairns GF porridge oats are resized to make them available on prescription. You could use the GF oats to make your own muesli with your own choice of unsulphured fruits, nuts and other GF grains. The problem with a lot of bought GF muesli like the H&B one is not only soya but also almonds which are high in salycilate and a lot of GF folk seem also salycilate sensetive.

thanks. It seems the more I learn about being gluten intolerant the more I have to learn!
