Hi bejhamin

I've found some supermarkets are better than others in this regard, even amongst their own stores. The green 4 lettered supermarket (A***), I have found to be about the worst for promoting only own brand stuff; although I think they are beginning to show some improvement in my part of the country.

I often resort to shopping around when I don't find what I want in a particular store; and have become quite savvy in knowing who does what and where.

I guess it's worth remembering that not so long back, there wasn't a 'free from' section in any of the major supermarkets! So in some ways it's all relative.

Finally, there's always the internet shopping option.... Sometimes that does have its uses as well.

Good luck with the shopping ;-)

Hi Bejhamin

Regalbirdy is right, when I was informed about being a coeliac - you went to the chemist to collect your gluten free stuff which was very limited indeed. So I am not knocking them.

Do you go to any coeliac meetings - they often invite manufacturers to display their wares, sometimes you can pick up free samples to try, same with the internet. I must admit that years ago the bread was awful, so I bake my own, you have much more range, and can try different recipes. I don't have a bread maker, make it by hand also cheaper too as I dairy intolerant too, it is hard to get that even on the chemist lists these days.

Anyway, best of luck whatever you choose to do.

I think lots of supermarkets by me are/were quite good at gluten free produce, but I've noticed that lately, most supermarkets are getting rid of the specifically gluten free brands (e.g, udis) and replacing it with their own supermarket brand of gluten free food which is nowhere near as nice!

I agree with Ames1912, if you take spaghetti as an example, you used to have own brand in all the supermarkets plus DS or Heinz which were dearer but a lot nicer IMO. Now all you can buy is own brand.

I know we all want it cheaper but they are doing it at the expense of taste and less healthy ingredients.

I find Sainsburys ok for range, stocking Kallo, Doves, DS, and others - they do hide gf stuff on the normal shelves though e.g. Kallo stock cubes and rice/corn crackers. That said I also buy quite a lot of things on line especially for the holidays.
