Has anyone suffered from 'glutened' k... - Gluten Free Guerr...
Has anyone suffered from 'glutened' kind symptoms from dates? I suspect dates also cause bloating and other symptoms similar gluten.
Did you check the packaging? Some dried fruit and nuts are processed on plant that also processes gluten containing products or using gluten to clean the equipment. There is some more information at this link deglutenous.com/being-glute...
It maybe that you are sensitive and reacting to the glucose syrup coating on the dates, if you are then you may find that reading labels rather than following the "GF" label a healthier option. There are many out there that cannot tolerate derivatives that the majority can. To find out more Commission Directive 2007/68/EC Annex IIIa and European Food Safety Authority putting gluten in the search box. Good luck and you are not alone.
Oh and they do dust them with flour to keep them seperate
Then why when you buy them they have a sticky runny liquid? flour would dry them out. are you thinking of british chips?
I am not british. Many dates brought into AUSTRALIA have been dusted in flour so they are not runny, as you put it. They are clearly labeled as "contains wheat"as needed in our packaging requirements. What say you now?
Sorry to butt in here folks but Roscoe is right that we also have dried fruit especially mixed dried fruits that are dusted with wheat flour to stop the fruits sticking together and in the UK wheat has to be labelled as an ingredient so some dried fruits have an allergy warning for wheat.
Now as for chips I thought that many chips were coated with dextrose to give them extra flavour, colour and make them crispier. Also many caterers dust potatoes with flour before roasting as the flour is supposed to increase the surface area and therefore make the roast potatoes crispier.
At the end of the day food is processed and messed about with so much 'we' as coeliac have to be very vigilant and not take anything for granted. I was surprised to hear that some hotels who do a buffet breakfast add wheat flour to their scrambled eggs to keep them fluffier and to appear fresher for longer.
Hi Jerry I got caught with the scrambled eggs the other day. It was all I had at a buffet style breakfast. Out came a new lot of eggs so off I went to be first. No contamination here I thought. Only to be so ill on the way home. You gotta be so carefull.
Powdered eggs.
Dates also have a high fructose content and some people have fructose intolerance which causes an upset stomach.
Does anyone know if there are any good dates to eat that have not had anything happen to them?
I can't give you a name - in fact the packaging didn't have a name that I could identify - but I did buy some dates that were fine from a Turkish-run "Mediterranean shop" grocers. I think they might have come from Pakistan and were in a mainly green box with a picture of a child. They were drier than the ones you usually get in supermarkets (which I assume means lack of glucose syrup) but really sweet. I'm not sure this is all that helpful, but they are out there...
Thank you Freelancer - I have eaten dates since diagnosis and nothing awful happened but was alarmed at the concerns flagged up on this post. The dates I ate were not from a supermarket - they were from a middle eastern shop, and like you said drier. So I suspect nothing had been done to them. But I am grateful for being alerted to this problem with dates as I love to eat them at times.
I have yet to find Fructose on any date labels only glucose syrup
I really miss eating dates at Xmas.......
Ingredients are supposed to be on labels, including fructose.
Dates are one of the FODMAP baddies I think, so can cause similar symptoms in coeliacs.
I'd suggest it was the sugars in them. Often if I've had Prune juice I bloat and feel v sick - they can often contain Sorbitol. One of the FODMAPs that is hard to process. Dates can also be processed, coated in sugars. Email the producer and ask more. Do also do a search on this site for FODMAPs we have lots of posts on this i.e. dates are a fruit with stones in & a typical FODMAP.
