Hi, Are they above the new 20ppm limit? Because as of the 1st Jan 2012 new labelling laws for gf came into force and the allowed level of gluten in food considered safe for coeliac dropped from 200ppm to 20ppm This gluten level would be because of the malt content.

Incidentally Kellogs introduced cornflakes and Rice Krispies in the US last year so if they can introduce them over there why not here? So maybe more UK ought to ask Kellogs for totally gf breakfast cereals over here.

If it's any help to you many supermarkets own brands have below 20ppm and are still listed in CUK's food directory

I thought that Kellogs had not been gluten-free for a long time. I used to eat Sainbury's & they also are no longer gluten-free so now have to pay ridiculous prices for specially prepared cereal. Why do all these products have to have gluten in them? Is it because it makes them cheaper to produce?

I think that you are right Judith, I can't tolerate any barley malt regardless of the level and I don't have a food directory so I made a wrong assumption.

I think that coeliac should ask Kellogs for a gf cereal. So maybe GFG members should all email Kellogs and ask for a gluten free/malt free breakfast cereal over here, I'll join in.

In the UK. As we are the largest consumers of breakfast cereals per head per capita. The reason that manufacturers add malt is it enhances the taste, it also fortifies them with iron so that's why it's added.

Rice Krispies have malt in them, like Kellogs cornflakes hence not gluten free.

Malt is added to give them more flavour.

Hi meanioni, have a look at this please its the Blog posted by Phil with an extract from CUK's latest food directory and it says how some malted cereals fall below 20ppm so are below codex etc.

Malt extract got added when they had to cut their salt levels!

Just to show that Kellog's can do it:

Thanks all - I'm very sensitive so won't be eating them again. I will be emailing Kellogs UK and ask for them to do the US version.

I think I may be lucky but I eat Kellogg's cornflakes every morning without any reaction at all. I feel like a fraud, so many of.you have such a terrible time with coeliacs . I don't feel worthy.

Not what you're looking for?
