A DVLA renewal question…

Hi!

Hope you don’t mind me asking but I have a question to ask for anyone who has a medical licence due to having glaucoma in both eyes and who has renewed the medical licence regularly over the years:

My question: when you receive your letter from DVLA to renew have you also always received a V1 medical form (white form asking series of questions about your vision) to complete and return each time too?

Many thanks!

Yes. Please keep it for further reference. You can fill online when it is due for renewal if it is only one medical condition e.g glaucoma. With best wishes,

Thank you for your reply. My question is more specific: has DVLA requested you complete a V1 form every single time you have renewed your medical licence?

And when you’ve filled it in online have DVLA followed by post a letter requesting to a field test and visual acuity at Specsavers?

The detail is useful in this instance if you don’t mind clarifying.

Thank you balacakku!

yes. DVLA always send the paper copy letter form which we have to complete it every time. In the forwarding letter it will mention whether you can fill by online option. If you fill online you do not need to send the paper form. DVLA will acknowledge your completed form by sending email to your email address which you have put in.

Please note when you fill online form DVLA will ask for proof of ID login for Gov.UK. There are a few steps you have to do. Please follow the steps .

After DVLA received your form (paper or online) they will send the letter by post to arrange for Specscavers test. They will give the lists of Specscavers testing shops in your area for testing appointment. You can select the shop which is convenient for you and make the appointment with them. With best wishes.

yes always had a letter, every time, which I’ve completed online. Then received a further letter detailing that I need to go to a designated Specsabers for a VF test.

Thank you! That’s helpful. Can I ask though did you get a V1 form (visual medical questionnaire and declaration) and did you complete that online at each renewal?

I have just renewed my driving licence and had the white form to complete - not available on line. Then had a letter re getting an eye test. All OK and licence arrived before letter confirming this. Didn't have this form at previous renewal. Diagnosed with NT glaucoma 5 years ago.

Thank you that’s helpful info. Did the renewal, when you didn’t get the V1 form, happen to land during lockdown by any chance? Did you get a medical licence for 5 yrs or less?

Much appreciated thank you?

Referred by Specsavers Sept 19 and was Diagnosed with glaucoma in one eye March 20. March 21 diagnosed in both eyes. First test was July 21 - no V1 and licence just continued till Dec 21 when I was 70. Did another test Sept 21 - was sent a V1 but offered the opportunity to fill in an online form which was a lot shorter. Renewed for 3 years as would be normal due to my age. Nov 23 was sent a V1 no opportunity to complete online. Despite deterioration in my eyesight and having cataracts licence was renewed for another 3 years. I don't drive very much now but am having surgery later this year and they will remove the cataracts at the same time so hoping for some improvement in my sight. Looking through the paperwork it looks as if the offer of the online form could have been due to Covid backlog.

Thank you so much for replying your response does really help me. The detail you’ve given is great too.

I can’t go in to detail myself at the moment but fair to say my medical licences current renewal has gone awry, not due to medical reasons but what appear to be an administrative mixup during my renewal process during lockdown. Like you I also renewed online in 2021 which was a simplified V1 and had a Specsavers test but things didn’t get processed as perhaps they should following that, which is frustrating.

If I get more info of what actually happened I’ll post an update. Thank you! Off to fill out more forms for DVLA and a potentially very long anxious wait! 🤨
