I wasn’t aware until I collected my meds from the Pharmacy, that you shouldn’t take any Antihistamine tablets such as in Sleep Aids which are widely available, if you have glaucoma. I have been taking these on and off as my sleeping isn’t great. It got me wondering if there is anything else out there we should avoid taking. I do have de-caf coffee which I gather is better to have than ordinary.

Antihistamine
I think it depends on the type of glaucoma.
I understood it to be more of an issue if you have narrow angle glaucoma than open angle.

I asked the consultant about this as I have several allergies, he said that the second generation ones are fine, so I take Loratadine, not sure they help with sleeping though?
I’ve also been told to avoid steroids, which as I have asthma is impossible, but the consultant said it’s a balancing act and if my medication affects my eyes then he will adjust my treatment to compensate.
Hi, I developed Glaucoma in left eye in 2020. No history in family. However, over the last 10 years I have taken anti histamine for a rashing condition and horse fly bites whilst golfing. Read that AH can cause glaucoma. Good luck with your research. Angela
I take Loretadine daily for allergies. Consultant knows and considers its not a problem. I avoid steroids where I can. But as has been said it’s a balancing act as to what is the greatest risk v gain to resolve health issues. When I am prescribed something by my GP that is contraindicated for glaucoma and I’m concerned I email my consultant for a steer. I have POAG with NTG signs in both eyes and mixer are damage in one.
