Glaucoma suspect

Please let me know if high IOC can suddenly cause headaches even though not diagnosed with Glaucoma. Waking up with headaches sweating dry mouth last week since attending eye clinic. Dont know if connected to eyes or just stress after consultant telling me to start eye drops as preventative. Appreciate feedback before consulting my GP. Many thanks Emer

I don't believe high eye pressure causes any pain. However, I think it is entirely possibly you are having a delayed reaction to the drops they administer to check your eyes.I react badly to both the coloured dye and the anaesthetic, the reaction takes a couple of days to come on and then between 2-4 weeks to subside. Doctors will tell you this isn't possible but it has happened too many times to me to be a coincidence.

I now have my eye pressures taken without any drops, which is uncomfortable but is doable, and I don't get ill afterwards.

I hope that helps a little.

Hi Alfred V thank you so much for reply. I have very sensitive eyes at best of times so I guess its possible. Got checked on 13th February and really only this week that I've had such pain. I am waiting to hear back from my consultant to make sure I have to start eye drops as just want to be sure it's right option. I'm taking high eye pressure seriously but my eye hospital were more interested in just monitoring rather than drops. Either way at moment no damage to optic nerve and no Glaucoma diagnosis so will of course do what she suggests. In meantime just seems insane the headache eye pain etc that I've had sensitive to light etc. I do have dry eyes at best of times. Today funny enough my eyes seem more like normal. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Hi, I can unfortunately confirm that high eye pressure causes pain in the eye and alot of it, this happens when an IOP reaches high 30s +, also pre my Trabulectomy operation and I had a high IOP frequently and for long periods I was getting regular headaches and often for days on end, since the opp I am hardly getting any, so yes I do definitely think, speaking from personal experience that the two are connected.

I had severe headaches before my diagnosis of glaucoma. They would happen about every 6 months. They would start within a few minutes of waking up in the mornings and last for 3 days alongside vomiting. I mentioned this at my first appointment at the eye clinic and was told that the headaches were due to glaucoma. Since I started the eyedrops I’ve not had a headache.. As you have the eyedrops then you are receiving preventative treatment which is great and hopefully your headache will settle down as the eyedrops reduce your pressures.

Thanks so much but my headaches are nothing like you describe and at moment no Glaucoma but will see how things go. Will be back to Consultant in six months so will be well monitored.

I am over seventy years old and I have glaucoma, and I doubted sometimes like you about my headaches that happened towards the mornings. Then I noticed my pillow was too firm and guessed that was bothering my blood circulation thru the skin of my scalp, also my bed was close to my modem, especially on the side of my head where the pain happened. I was not sure which one of these 2 causes was responsible about my headaches, or may be both causes acted together. So I disconnected the modem at nights, and I found a new thinner pillow with soft foam inside, and a soft pillow case, It's been one month I don't have any headaches.

About the dry mouth, I am 99% sure that you were breathing with your mouth during your sleep. Do some research about Buteyko Breathing Method. It helped me so much. There are a lot of videos about that.

Thanks so much and to everyone who replied. I have since had another eye test with my optician pressure higher end of normal but really from their perspective and looking at my years of scans no major difference and Optic nerve normal. For now I'm trusting my headache not related to Glaucoma my head affected when I eat etc eyes sore but more related to dry eyes will keep an eye and see in August. I really want to trust myself and make informed decisions about my health. Thanks again
