benefits for glaucoma

my mum has glaucoma and has lost her driving licence as a result - went to get dvla check in edinburgh and was removed as a result. She and my dad are retired but I'm wondering if anyone has experience of claiming any benefits or blue badge in Scotland?

Hi Louclark. I’m sorry to hear about your Mum losing her driving licence. Such a loss of independence for her. If you look at the City of Edinburgh Council website, they will have information regarding the Blue Badge scheme. If Mum lives in another Scottish Council area, check their website for Blue Badge applications.

I think unless she’s 90 or registered blind/partly-sighted she won’t qualify, but maybe will if she has other health issues.

With regards DWP Benefits, there isn’t anything ‘glaucoma’ specific, again there may be if she is registered blind/partly-sighted (Attendance Allowance maybe).

Best to get her to make contact with DWP to discuss Benefit entitlement,

Her local Council may have a service to do a ‘Benefit Health-check’.

I work for West Lothian Council and we have a dedicated Advice Shop for residents to check Benefit entitlement. Her local Council website is always the best place to look.

My mum is 78, with severe glaucoma, and had her licence revoked 9 yrs ago. She is entitled to nothing due to this condition. My Dad still drives & so do I, though I also have glaucoma in both eyes and fully expect to lose my licence at some point in the future. I know this forum is wonderful with lots of quality information though.
