Not a question, but a long awaited answer!

I want to let you all know that today I received my new driving licence, six months to the day since the previous one expired - see my previous posts about this. I am so relieved, not being able to drive would have meant a major change in lifestyle and a loss of independence.

Those of you who are still waiting for your new licences, I was pleased to see that the renewal date of the new licence is from the date of issue not from the date of renewal so August 2024 and not February 2024.

Congratulations. It is always such a relief , I think the DVLA have no idea about the worry it all involves when it drags on.

At least I now know to also anticipate a long wait for my licence . I am still waiting for the eye test !

Useful to hear that at least they are counting the next test from the date of issue, the least they can do !!!

Congratulations! I agree! It’s a huge stressor waiting to hear. I’m sure it can’t be good for our IOP pressures. I’ve just had my letter from DVLA obstructing me to contact specsavers for a test. Let’s hope they speed up a bit. My licence expires end of Sept. How long is you medical licence for? Mine was for 3 years last time. Curious if 3 yrs is standard.

Also why do the DVLA ask you to email your application for speed and efficiency and then they respond back by letter? Makes no sense to me if the DVLA are so busy.

Well if LOGIC had anything to do with it, they should at least be taking the Section 88 provision to its logical conclusion and issuing temporary ( say six months ) DLs without the Specsavers rigmarole , on solemn declaration that one's Consultant states OK to drive , from the vision aspect . Perhaps with email to that effect from the Consultant's NHS.net address [ apparently this is considered reliable ].

Ooo! That’s interesting! I had considered contacting my consultant for a view so will do that now. If I haven’t heard by my licence expiry date (end September) I’ll try that and also lobby my local MP. 👍🏻

I would not wait if I were you.

Ask if your Consultant is prepared to email ( from his nhs.net address - this is v v important, they will accept no other I was told - ) DVLA to the effect that s/he has examined you on date X and your are fit to drive as far as vision is concerned, in her / his medical opinion.

This can do no harm and may do some good. But I would not delay in making the request.

That’s great news how long have you had gluacoma for is it open angle I was 53 when diagnosed and so scared of losing my liecence and going blind is consuming me everyday
