'Neuralgia' is basically defined as pain in, or along the course of a nerve, and can certainly occur elsewhere.

One of the commonest, and most difficult, is trigeminal neuralgia, which affects the face.

The face may also be affected by 'post-herpetic neuralgia' - where people have had shingles around their eye, but it can be a residual effect from shingles in any of the cranial and spinal nerve areas.

Other forms of nerve pain occur - such as sciatica, shoulder and neck nerve entrapment, disc issues etc.

Usual painkillers are often ineffective, but many people receive more help from certain medications developed for epilepsy or depression - but this does NOT mean that your doctors think that these cause the depression. Equally, chronic pain management may well include psychological assessment and help, but this is just another brick in the wall to strengthen us against pain and isn't because it is 'all in the mind.'
