FDA Bans NMN as a Dietary Supplement: Why and What Happened?, By Kimberly Drake, Healthnews, Published on February 13, 2024

"Healthnews has compiled the timeline of events leading up to and after the FDA banned NMN. We detailed the twists, turns, and unexpected roadblocks for consumers and companies hoping to market the anti-aging compound."

See this link for the full story:

Also for anyone now using MNM, or thinking about using it in the future, you apparently have a short window to stock up. I have never used MNM, but am familiar with its potential metabolic benefits via the work by David Sinclair and others with a research focus on longevity. I decided the risk of it also benefiting cancer cell longevity was a concern that has yet to be fully discounted by current research, and so I've made the choice to wait for better evidence to surface. I learned of the FDA's most recent action via today's email (copied below) from one of my main supplement suppliers, iHerb.

Hey there,

We wanted to let you know that beginning Monday, February 26th at 10:00 AM PT, and until further notice, iHerb will stop selling NMN in the U.S. (emphasis added)

iHerb will continue to offer the highest quality NAD products:

I also see that Amazon also has taken action and will also cease to sell MNM, but March 13 is their cut-off date:

nutraingredients-usa.com/Ar...

A quick sampling of other online supplement companies that carry various MNM brands, shows product currently available and none have posted notices about its removal from continued for-sale status?

These actions by the FDA are similar to ones taken against NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) and Red Yeast Rice products. For those unfamiliar with the confounding issue related to NAC, it is outlined in the NutraIngredients-USA article linked above.

Bottomline to all three actions by the captive FDA is that Big Pharma doesn't like competition from the supplement industry, even though far, FAR more people die each year from pharma products that from supplements. In fact, the difference is not even close.

Whatever you do or choose to take (or don't), Stay S&W,

Ciao - cujoe

I'm not familiar NMW but I am with NAC and Red Yeast Rice.

Interesting, thank you. Googling "red rice yeast" I see that it has been banned by the FDA, but it still seems to be offered by the usual suspects. Stock up while I can?

Cigafred - The red yeast rice story is well-profiled in this Mother Jones article from the dark ages of 1998. Yeast was the original source for the active component of the first statin, lovastatin. When pharma was able to lab-synthesize it, patent it, and then get FDA approval of it, the red yeast rice people were basically shut out of selling their products based on the natural source. Until . . .

The lead into the story also profiles the flaws in the methods used to track drug side effects. I'm not aware that the monitoring process used has changed much over the ensuing 25 years since the article was written - witness the CDC/FDA's VAERS reporting system for reporting side effects from COVID vaxxs. How well do we think that is working? (Look to those outside the US to tell us that.)

Referenced BMJ paper is here:

As for RYR products, I started using Cholestene back in 2019 and in 3 months with recommended dosage (2 x twice a day), my HDL ~ doubled, my trriglycerides dropped by 35%, my LDL went down by 30%, and my total Cholesterol dropped to 147. (my main objective was to raise my low HDL.)

I learned of Cholestene from a HU post of info from a Consumer Lab test of RYR supplements. Consumer Lab's testing indicated Cholestene provided a pill-for-pill statin equivalent of the pharma form of lovastatin. It actually costs me a bit more than 2 x what a generic statin would, but as with my use of berberine vs metformin, I'd rather pay more for a natural supplement than one synthesized in the lab. Our mutual NC mountain friend kindly pointed out the importance of triglycerides (over LDL) with a target ratio of HDL-Trig of 2 and an "ideal" of 1.

I have no reason to think that RYR supplements are going to disappear, but since they are not allowed to quote "statin-equivalent" content, caveat emptor when you make your selection.

Stay S&W,

Cujoe, Very clear, thank you again. You and our NC mountain friend (and Russ Hollyer) continue to make we wonder if I am anywhere near as smart as I thought I was. Anyway, I am smart enough to profit from the wisdom you all send my way.

It takes a village - and we are all villagers with something to contribute. Gald to be able to provide some additional "clarity". We are all in need of lots of that these days! Stay Well, Amigo. Ciao - Capt'n cujoe

FAR more people die each year from pharma products that from supplements. In fact, the difference is not even close.

Can you provide some references for this? in settings where a given pharmacy product and supplement are used to treat the same issue/illness/etc?

Can we normalize the number of people that die from either one to a per capita basis, or perhaps more accurately, a per-user basis (since the # per capita using e.g. a given supplement might be far smaller than the # per capita using a given pharmaceutical)?

For that matter, we can ask the question, what is the efficacy of pharmaceuticals vs supplements in terms of saving lives? in terms of extending lives?

My Dog,

This does not surprise me... Do what the government says or else... I also do not take NMN, and as for red yeast rice, what is the great danger??

I wish they would apply such diligence on cutting government waste...

Dangerous Dave - See the Mother Jones article in my reply to cigafred for the history of RYR vs statins. No dissimilar to what is now happening to MNM. (What would we do without the government protecting us from ourselves?)

Stay S&W - ciao

K9 Wonder,

I always loved the line,"We're from the government, and we're here to help."... Actually, they are here to help themselves to your money... Gotta love those CoVid Vaccine SE's that they want to bury... So much for transparency..

Hope you are having a nice day in NC...

Blue skies here, so I'm heading out ot my fav park for a bit of imersion in it's "modified" nature. The birds, turtles, and other critters are just glad to have it not paved over or subdivided into more tiny boxes, so no reason for K9's to complain either.

You do likewise in your home range in The Mountain State, Bro'.

Catch Ya' later. Ciao - K9 terror

While I share some of your sentiments on BigPharma, I believe it is prudent to steer clear of anything related to David Sinclair. Do your own research on him.

No question about Sinclair. Search for info on him and resveratrol going back about 10 years past.

Just had the below article come across my email this morning. I don't take it now as same concerns as cujoe, and may be opposite my synaloic (sp?) I take (per you know who), but my wife was thinking about it. Just bought a year+ supply. Notice how this Harvard prof now working with drug company to produce what is already there. Just follow the money. Works every time.

Very interesting... And in my opinion, a bit ridiculous for the Govt to regulate something they supposed do not Regulate! If someone chooses to obtain something from it's natural source, what's the problem? Lol... Anyways...

Always appreciative of the information and deep diving on these issues done on behalf of others! Thank you!
