my steps are far higher than recorded on the app which I find really annoying. Any reason why?

I average 4.5 - 6000 steps per day but on the exercise chart it only records 15 minutes so it is never accurate, but I don’t worry about that as long I am satisfied with my steps performance

I thought it was connected to my Fitbit.

I need to remember to keep my phone in my pocket 😂 but you are right.
