Staying Active in Winter

Since the clocks changed, I’ve found myself in “cosy” mode. I’ve been trying out new soup recipes, have a cosy blanket on the couch to curl up under, and have my favourite craft shop’s website bookmarked on my internet browser. It’s hard to muster up the motivation to get out for a walk on a dark wet evening, but I know that staying active is a big part of staying happy and well during the winter months too! Exercise can help with mood and even help lower the risk of getting ill!

When the weather turns and the evenings get darker, there are more things to consider when trying to become or stay active. Here are some things I am planning to try. I’d love to hear what you are trying or what you’d recommend!

Stay Warm

Warm-ups are important to avoid injury, especially when it’s colder - here is a good link from the NHS on a warm-up routine - but even starting slow for a few minutes before increasing your intensity will make a difference.

Safety First

A dark evening walk can be lovely, but it’s important to stay safe when out and about. Reflective clothing and a flashlight/torch are a must - and dress in layers so that you can adjust as your body temperature changes. Choose well-lit areas for a walk if you can, where paths have been cleared of slippery leaves. If you can bring a friend with you, even better!

Switch it up!

If you’re finding the dark evenings too much, maybe you can try switching things up. If you’re busy during the day, try to set aside 20 minutes or half an hour in the morning or at lunchtime. It might make the difference in enabling you to get outdoors for some movement and fresh air more regularly.

Activity Classes

If the weather is preventing you from getting out and your budget allows, group classes at your fitness centre, pool, or even dance classes can be a great way of staying active (and social) in the winter months.

Video and Online

Of course, your trusty EXI videos are always available, but there is a wealth of content online for free to suit every preference and ability, and you can fit them into your schedule day or night!
