Better but still not quite right

We’ve come a long way and if I think back 6-12 months there’s been a lot of progress. We’ve gone through stages of severe withholding and multiple soilings each day to a softish poo roughly every 3 days and soiling is now rare. I’m over the moon at this! BUT my own gut instinct I still think something isn’t quite right. His poo is LARGE when he does pass them and his colon/rectum likely enlarged and lazy from years of issues. We stopped movicol over 6 months ago and this was a turning point in terms of reducing the soiling and mental boost for him to not be having accidents. With lots of encouragement and watchful eye for the signs generally he will go to the loo eventually. But we went to the GP yesterday and he wants a poo passed at least every other day and prescribed lactulose to help this and hopefully allow the gut to shrink to normal size. I’m hopeful now my son is a bit older he’s more aware of the need to go to the toilet and won’t try to delay quite as much as he used to but I’m nervous about going backward again. We are also waiting on a referral to Pediatrics just to be sure. Has anyone had a similar sequence of poo events?! Can you offer any advice about the lactulose please? Thanks

I think of the lactulose as milder but does a similar job to movicol. My daughter is now on lactulose to try to get her pooing every other day. My son is on movicol, Senna and suppositories as his constipation is severe. I would just see how it goes with the lactulose. It can take a year or two for things to settle down. Lactulose is mild and easy to take and hopefully it will be enough for your son.
