Hello, my name is Steve, I have suffered from sleep deprivation epilepsy from the age of 21, this type is generally found in children and not adult, I am now 35, seizure free for 9 years, but recently I have notice when I get anxious, or when I'm trying to sort stress full situation out I have jerks, is this normal for this to happen.

Thanks

Hi Steve,

I have a type of epilepsy called juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) characterised by tonic clonic seizures, myoclonic jerks and absence seizures, all of which I have suffered from. The main trigger for my seizures is also not having had enough sleep.

For me it start around age 14 and it was not controlled until I found the right medication aged 21. I was then completely seizure free for about 7 years but I have had about 7 tonic clonic seizures in the past 2.5 years plus a few of the other kinds.

The jerks too are having could be myoclonic jerks. These are the same as when you are falling asleep and jerk yourself awake but in epilepsy can happen any time. It can be your whole body or just one limb.

I find that as well as just a single night where I've had a bad night's sleep, accumulated tiredness can cause my seizures. This can be made worse by lots of travelling, or having to interact socially more than usual. I guess this is a kind of stress on my body.

Hope this is helpful,

Amy
