My mom's memory problems!

I am very grateful to all the loved ones who gave me hope and energy with their messages during this period.🩶 Almost a year has passed since my mother was diagnosed with herpes encephalitis type 1, I must say that she is now in a good physical condition, but her short-term memory is not working well, and she is not recording new memories, I want to know if there is any hope for her full recovery or not? Thank you all🫂

One year is no time at all after E. Hold on to hope.

Wait for what exactly? Full recovery? To be honest, that might not happen. I’m in my fifth year after E at age 24, and I know I will never fully recover. Most severe E cases are like that. I don’t know how severe your mom’s was, though. I just know she will most likely keep improving after that first year, but the rate will slow.

Hi Ftmz, I am really sorry for you and your mother. It takes time and its good to play game for concentration and avoid stress and rest a lot. My Enzephalitis was in June and for me its sometimes hard. I forget sometimes a lot but then I guess its okay, better then directly after hospital. Yesterday was a day I had headache(before E I never had headache) and I am really afraid it can come back. So remember the good :-) and do not expect a complete healing but work for it. Wish you all the best ❤️

The end of the first year is still early days. Christmas at the end of my first way was an absolute disaster. I couldn’t stay awake on Christmas Day, and I completely forgot we were meant to be seeing family on Boxing Day. I was very depressed . My encephalitis specialist told us it would take two years to get a realistic idea of how far my brain could repair itself . It was very true, as in the second year my memory gradually progressed enough for me to regain my independence. I didn’t make a full recovery but it was definitely a vast improvement.

Everyone’s recovery is different, but I’d say wait another year to see if your mother’s memory improves further . If your mother is able to write, try and get her to write a few sentences in a diary each day recording what she has done . That’s what my speech therapist advised me do, and it definitely helped my memory . ❤️‍🩹

I think it’s also a fantastic way to look back, at some point in the future, and see what has gotten easier over time and how things you found much more difficult then are much more straight forward now
