Sleeping problems

My partner is suffering terribly with sleeping problems after being struck by an auto-immune encephalitis 6 months ago. Has anybody got similar problems and what are you doing to sleep? Have you been prescribed sleeping medication? If so, what are you taking (if you mind me asking). Our GP is not very familiar with encephalitis.

Hi Tuesando,

I’m recovering from auto immune encephalitis and am also having major troubles sleeping. I’m currently taking melatonin and occasionally zopiclone as well as trying to use headspace / mediation apps before bed.

Sending lots of love to you both as it’s such a difficult time and hope that helps.

There’s also this which may help (but you may have already seen) encephalitis.info/guideline... and a link to a guide for GPs (which I haven’t read yet but may also help) encephalitis.info/generalpr...

I also recommend melatonin 3mg. This was recommended by my neurologist and does help. I also have a routine where I don’t stay up late and get too tired. I take a warm shower at 9pm then take the melatonin and get into bed. It also helps me to have something positive to think about as I drift off otherwise I’d lay there and worry all night. Hope this helps.

Hi Tuesando!

I'm so sorry your partner has been unwell and I can only imagine how difficult it has been for you and your partner. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Firstly your partner and you are not on your own. Many people suffer from sleep difficulties after encephalitis. I'd definitely link in with your partner's doctor and see if they have any suggestions.

I know little things like sticking to a strict routine, of when I go to bed and when I wake up helps a lot. Making sure I get some form of exercise during the day so that I am tired enough by bedtime also helps. I also changed my diet a lot and try not to eat past 7pm so my body has time to digest the food before bed! I'm not sure if these suggestions will help your partner but they help me!

I couldn't find something exactly on sleep after encephalitis but the encephalitis society have a great fact sheet on managing fatigue - encephalitis.info/managing-...

All the best and hope your partners sleep improves over time
